Body and Soul: The Sacred Balance of Wellness in God’s Design

In today’s society, the narrative surrounding our physical well-being is anything but balanced. We find ourselves on either end of the spectrum: obsessing over our physical appearance or neglecting our health altogether. As Christians, it’s time we reshape our understanding of the body within the framework of God’s design and intent.

Consider this: each year, the average American consumes a staggering:

  • 152 lbs of added sugar (visualize 31- 5lb bags)
  • 222 lbs of meat
  • 45 gallons of soda
  • 40 pizzas

Such dietary habits are consequential, with alarming statistics such as one in three Americans born after 2000 likely to experience early-onset diabetes. And with seven out of 10 Americans overweight, it’s evident that our culture’s relationship with food and health is askew.

Created for a Purpose

Our bodies, crafted by God Himself, operate best within certain parameters. Respecting and nurturing them can either arise from a place of negligence or be seen as an act of worship. The importance of how we treat our bodies transcends mere health; it’s closely interwoven with our relationship with God. Just as we are designed to thrive within a certain spiritual order, our bodies too were meant to flourish within a designed physical framework.

This desire to control and manipulate, whether it pertains to food, finances, or even relationships, reflects a deep-seated yearning rooted in the Fall. But aligning our bodies and actions with their divine purpose is more about adjusting our heart’s position than the food on our table.

Biblical Wisdom on Bodily Health

Reflecting on Apostle Paul’s wisdom to Timothy, we learn:

“Train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way…” (I Tim. 4: 7-10).

Paul cautions against being swayed by cultural myths, which in his time might have encompassed extreme dietary restrictions or misconceptions about marriage. Such distortions could distance us from embracing God’s creation as good and purposeful. God’s gifts are meant for our enjoyment, not abstention, especially when received with a heart of gratitude.

As the Church, we’re representatives of God’s kingdom on earth, embodying a new humanity. Through living balanced lives, full of gratitude for God’s gifts and awareness of our health, we can point others towards Him and the promise of a renewed world.

A Holistic Approach to Well-being

As followers of Christ, our view of health shouldn’t be confined by society’s narrow lens. We must rise above the culture’s misleading signals on food and relaxation. Our Western indulgence, driven by convenience and cost, often harms both our health and the environment we’re entrusted to safeguard.

Our actions should stem from a deeper, theologically-rooted understanding of our bodies. It might translate to supporting local farmers, opting for organic produce, or finding a balanced approach to exercise. The essence is to find a holy equilibrium, recognizing that spiritual growth doesn’t exclude bodily well-being but includes it.

In everything we do, even in our daily rituals like eating or exercising, let us remember to do so for the glory of God, reflecting the intricate balance of body and soul He has so lovingly designed for us.
