A Houston Church Plant Grows Neighbors Through Gardens

Southside Fellowship in Houston's Third Ward has grown to about 60 people with five baptisms since its relaunch last year.

A church plant in Houston is building ties with its neighborhood through gardens, men's gatherings and a congregation drawn from many cultures. The Church Leadership Pulse pointed to Southside Fellowship as the bright spot in its Church Leadership Radar episode for October 7, 2026.

The episode draws on a profile of the church titled "Church Planter Believes There's Still Hope in Houston's Third Ward." According to the episode, the profile describes a church plant building relationships through neighborhood gardens, men's gatherings and a multicultural congregation, and it says the church has grown to about 60 people with five baptisms since its relaunch last year. The host was careful to call this ongoing relationship work, not a brand new development.

The episode explains why a garden works so well for a church. A garden meets a practical need, and shared space gives neighbors a reason to gather. The encouraging part, the host said, is the patient work of building trust and making room for people from different backgrounds.

That patience matches what Paul says in 1 Corinthians 3:6-7. One person plants, another waters, but it is God who gives the growth. Sixty people and five baptisms may not sound like much to a world that counts in thousands, but every one of those baptisms is a life changed. Pray for Southside Fellowship, for the neighbors who dig alongside its members, and for church planters in hard places everywhere who are willing to wait on the Lord for the harvest.
