How Advent Teaches Us About Vulnerability
Embracing the Incarnation's lessons on openness and connection.

The Advent season, leading up to Christmas, invites us to reflect on the profound mystery of the Incarnation God becoming human in the person of Jesus Christ. This divine act is a profound demonstration of vulnerability, offering deep insights into the nature of genuine connection and love.
The Vulnerability of the Incarnation
In the narrative of Christ's birth, we witness the Creator of the universe entering the world as a helpless infant, dependent on human care for survival. This act of divine humility underscores the lengths to which God goes to establish a relationship with humanity. As noted in a reflection on Advent, "God came to us floating in embryonic fluid... Embedded in the uterine wall of a Middle Eastern teenage woman."
Lessons for Our Lives
The Incarnation teaches us that true connection requires vulnerability. In our relationships, being open and authentic allows for deeper bonds and understanding. Just as God embraced human fragility, we are encouraged to embrace our own vulnerabilities and those of others, fostering genuine connections.
Embracing Vulnerability During Advent
During this Advent season, consider reflecting on the following:
Openness in Relationships: Are there areas where you can be more open and authentic with others, allowing for deeper connections?
Acceptance of Imperfection: Embrace your own imperfections and those of others, recognizing that vulnerability is a pathway to genuine relationships.
Contemplation of the Incarnation: Spend time meditating on the mystery of God becoming human, and the profound vulnerability it represents.
By embracing the lessons of vulnerability that Advent offers, we open ourselves to deeper connections with God and with those around us, reflecting the love and humility demonstrated in the Incarnation.
