Creating Positive Narratives About Adoption
How the Church Can Better Support Adoptive Families

In the Christian community, adoption is often celebrated with a strong spiritual undertone, but this approach can sometimes lead to unintended harm. While it's important to recognize the faithfulness of families who adopt, the narrative surrounding adoption in the Church needs careful consideration.
Avoid Over-Spiritualizing Adoption
Adoption is a beautiful act, yet it begins with loss. Overemphasizing the spiritual aspect can overshadow the pain involved. For instance, many adoptive children grow up hearing their story framed solely as a divine miracle, which can neglect the real pain of abandonment and the struggles their birth parents faced.
Be Mindful of Spiritual Allegories
Comparing physical adoption to spiritual adoption can be problematic. While spiritual adoption by God is a perfect, redeeming act, physical adoption is a process involving broken people and imperfect situations. When adoption is used as a spiritual allegory, it can place adoptive families on a pedestal, leading to disillusionment when human frailties inevitably surface.
Acknowledge All Aspects of the Adoption Story
Every adoption story is unique. It's crucial for the Church to acknowledge the complexities and varied experiences of adoptive families. Often, the narrative in the Church does not allow space for adoptive children to explore or express the full spectrum of their feelings, including their birth family's significance.
Conclusion
Adoption within the Church should be approached with sensitivity and a holistic understanding. By recognizing the pain, avoiding over-spiritualization, and valuing all sides of the story, we can create a more supportive environment for adoptive families.
