Do You Still Delight in God’s Word?
When Scripture grows stale, four lies are blocking your spiritual taste buds here’s how to reclaim its sweetness.

We all know that strange, unsettling moment. You open your Bible—pages you’ve read hundreds of times only now the words seem dull, foreign, distant. You can’t taste their comfort, see their beauty, feel their wisdom. It’s as if your spiritual taste buds have gone numb.
It might seem trivial at first but it’s not. Just as COVID-19 can clutter our olfactory nerves and leave us unable to taste our favorite meals, spiritual disruptions can block our ability to savor Scripture. That numbness often comes from lies seeping in, unexamined, and they shut down our appetite for God's Word.
Let’s expose four common lies that steal the sweetness of Scripture and rediscover how Psalm 19 helps us chew and delight in every line.
The Bible is irrelevant.
Sure, we'd never admit that out loud. But too often we approach ancient text thinking, What can this really do for my modern mess my job, my relationships, my future?
Psalm 19:7 reminds us: “The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.” This isn’t a dusty manual it’s spiritual GPS. From first dates to first mortgages, from hilltop highs to valley lows, this Word makes us wise. It won’t land by accident it’s breathed out by God and profitable for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16–17). The Bible isn’t irrelevant it’s indispensable.
The Bible won’t make sense.
Some parts are easy John 3:16, Psalm 23. But try Ezekiel or Revelation, and many of us give up. We wonder if we’ll ever understand.
Psalm 19:8 declares: “The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.” Even Peter who penned Scripture admitted Paul’s writings were hard to parse but he trusted God gives understanding (2 Timothy 2:7). Light comes slowly, not instantly growing as we linger in God’s Word. It’s okay to start small. The Bible will sharpen your vision if you don’t give up looking.
The Bible won’t address my pain.
When you’re in the dark loss, heartbreak, betrayal it can feel tone-deaf. Will these words bring balm to bruised bones?
Psalm 19:7–8 tells us the Lord’s law is perfect, reviving the soul. God doesn't merely soothe the surface. He restores. Think of Psalm 23: He leads us to still waters, restores our souls. In Scripture, we find not just answers but presence God in the pain. Even where cut runs deep, this Word revives.
The Bible won’t make me happy.
We’re quick to admit that family, hobbies, success bring joy. But Scripture? Joyful? Really?
Psalm 19:8 begins: “The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart.” And v.10 adds: “Sweeter also than honey” These aren’t theological footnotes they’re God’s design. Jesus said in John 15:11, “I have spoken that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.” The Bible isn’t just wisdom. It’s deep, abiding joy a spiritual sugar rush for your soul.
How to Reclaim the Sweetness:
1. Name the lies. When disconnect sets in, ask: Which of these four lies am I believing?
2. Read with openness. Approach Scripture expecting to learn—a little truth is a miracle.
3. Practice perseverance. Keep showing up. Even 5 verses a day, read slowly.
4. Celebrate the sweetness. When a verse resonates, rejoice. Mark it. Memorize it.
Your Bible hasn’t lost its flavor. Maybe your taste buds have gone numb but healing is possible. God's Word is sure, enlightening, reviving, joyful. Cling to Psalm 19. Trust the Lord to unclog your spiritual senses. Lean in for deeper taste and let every page become sweeter than the last.
