Will My Children Hold On to Their Faith?

How Mothers Can Impart Lasting Spiritual Truth in Every Season of Parenting

One of the most pressing questions for Christian parents is: will our children stay in the faith we cherish? As parents, especially mothers, we have the responsibility of shaping our children's spiritual lives from a young age. Proverbs 1:8 exhorts children to “forsake not your mother’s teaching,” reminding us that parents play a critical role in instilling a love for God’s truth.

In early childhood, the foundation for faith is built through repetitive, consistent teaching. Family devotions, prayer, and a lifestyle grounded in Scripture serve as constant reminders of God's presence. Children observe parents living out their faith, especially in moments of weakness or repentance. For example, even something as simple as apologizing to a child when we fail shows them that the Christian life is one of continual growth and grace.

As children grow into teens, parents may feel as if they are struggling to maintain influence, especially when they seem to drift. During this phase, it's important to maintain communication and encourage godliness through subtle but consistent reminders. A note of encouragement or a well-timed verse can nurture their growing independence while keeping them connected to the truth.

Once children become adults, the role of parents shifts, but the need for spiritual guidance doesn’t end. Our lives continue to serve as an example of faith, whether through how we handle life's challenges or how we build relationships with in-laws and grandchildren. Even in difficult circumstances like illness or aging, parents can model perseverance and faithfulness, showing their children the enduring hope found in Christ.

The key is to live a "reminding life" a life where truth is consistently shared, both in words and actions, across all seasons of parenting. No matter the stage, our goal remains the same: to help our children build their own relationship with God that will not easily be shaken.
