What Song Should We Choose?
Evaluating Worship Songs to Reflect Biblical Truth and Priorities.

Choosing songs for worship is a sacred responsibility, one that has a profound impact on the spiritual health of a congregation. While music stirs emotions, it’s the biblical depth and truth of the lyrics that truly matter.
A good worship song is singable, enjoyable, and, most importantly, rooted in Scripture. Songs that align with God’s Word should reflect both its truth and its tone. They must promote sound theology, not vague or misleading concepts. Colossians 3:16 encourages us to let the Word of Christ dwell in us richly through singing, and our songs should nurture this spiritual richness.
Yet, many modern worship songs fail to capture the full counsel of God. Too often, lyrics focus on personal feelings without tying them to the greater work of Christ. While emotion is important, worship must prioritize exalting God’s character, the gospel, and His work in salvation. A song should lead the congregation toward greater reverence and understanding of God’s grace.
Psalm 71, which contains 58 first-person pronouns, shows that personal reflections are a valid part of worship. However, these reflections are anchored in who God is and what He has done, ensuring the focus remains on the Creator. Biblical songs, like the Psalms, invite us to express a wide range of emotions joy, lament, gratitude while never losing sight of God's glory.
The impact of the songs we sing goes beyond the moment. If we were to learn theology only from worship music, how well would we know God after five years? Our worship should bring us into alignment with God’s priorities, filling our hearts and minds with biblical truth, not merely emotional satisfaction. Let’s ensure that our worship is not only passionate but biblically sound, offering a deep connection to the Word of God.
