Deeper Waters Knowing God Intimately

Intimacy with God is not a destination, but a lifelong journey of discovery.

Drawn to the Divine: More Than Just Knowing About

Have you ever felt a yearning so deep that it resonates within the very core of your being? A longing, not for something tangible, but for something… more? That "more," my friend, is often the quiet whisper of your soul calling out for a deeper connection with God. It’s the invitation to move beyond a surface-level understanding of faith into a truly intimate relationship with the One who created you.

We often hear about knowing God, but what does that really mean? Is it simply acknowledging His existence, memorizing scripture, or attending church regularly? While these things are certainly important aspects of faith, they are not the totality of knowing God. Knowing God is a dynamic, ever-evolving relationship, like the deepening bond between two friends or the unwavering love within a family. It’s about experiencing His presence, understanding His character, and aligning your life with His purpose.

Consider the words of Jeremiah 9:23-24: "This is what the Lord says: 'Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,' declares the Lord." This passage emphasizes that true knowledge of God transcends earthly achievements and focuses on understanding His very nature. It's not about what we can gain from Him, but about who He is and how we can reflect His character in our lives.

Navigating the Obstacles: Removing Barriers to Intimacy

The path to deeper intimacy with God is not always easy. We often encounter obstacles that hinder our progress and distract us from our pursuit of Him. These obstacles can take many forms, such as doubt, fear, busyness, and past hurts. It’s crucial to recognize these barriers and actively work to overcome them.

One of the biggest obstacles is doubt. We may question God’s existence, His goodness, or His ability to intervene in our lives. Doubt can creep in during times of hardship or when we face difficult decisions. It’s important to remember that doubt is a normal part of the human experience, but it doesn’t have to control us. We can combat doubt by seeking truth in scripture, praying for clarity, and surrounding ourselves with a supportive community of believers. Psalm 46:10 reminds us, "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." In moments of doubt, stillness and reflection can reveal God's unwavering presence.

Another common obstacle is fear. We may be afraid of surrendering control to God, of facing our past, or of stepping out in faith. Fear can paralyze us and prevent us from fully embracing God’s plan for our lives. But scripture tells us, “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love” (1 John 4:18). When we truly understand the depth of God’s love for us, we can overcome our fears and live with boldness and confidence.

Busyness is another subtle yet powerful obstacle. In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of activities and responsibilities. We may find ourselves so consumed with work, family, and social obligations that we neglect our relationship with God. It's in these moments that we must intentionally carve out time for prayer, meditation, and reflection. Just as we prioritize nurturing our relationships with loved ones, we must prioritize nurturing our relationship with God. As Martha and Mary teach us in Luke 10:38-42, sometimes sitting at the feet of Jesus is more important than even the most pressing tasks.

Finally, past hurts can create a significant barrier to intimacy with God. We may harbor resentment, bitterness, or unforgiveness towards others or even towards God Himself. These unresolved emotions can cloud our judgment and prevent us from experiencing God’s love and grace. It’s crucial to address these past hurts by seeking healing through prayer, counseling, and forgiveness. Forgiveness, especially, is not just for the benefit of the other person; it frees us from the chains of the past and allows us to move forward in faith.

Cultivating Intimacy: Practical Steps to Deepen Your Connection

So, how do we actively cultivate intimacy with God? What practical steps can we take to deepen our connection with Him? The answer lies in intentionally pursuing a lifestyle of faith, prayer, and obedience.

Start by making prayer a daily priority. Prayer is not simply a ritual or a duty; it’s a conversation with God. It’s an opportunity to pour out your heart, share your joys and sorrows, and seek His guidance. Find a quiet place where you can focus and connect with God without distractions. Don’t be afraid to be vulnerable and honest in your prayers. God already knows your thoughts and feelings, and He longs to hear from you. Try different forms of prayer, such as adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and supplication. Experiment with journaling your prayers or using prayer prompts to help you focus.

Another essential practice is studying scripture. The Bible is God’s written word, and it reveals His character, His will, and His plan for our lives. Make time each day to read and meditate on scripture. Don’t just read passively; engage with the text. Ask questions, reflect on the meaning, and apply it to your own life. Consider using a study Bible, a devotional, or an online resource to help you understand the context and significance of the scriptures. As Hebrews 4:12 states, "For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."

Furthermore, practice obedience to God’s commands. Obedience is not about blindly following rules; it’s about demonstrating your love and trust for God. When we obey God’s commands, we are aligning our lives with His will and experiencing the blessings that come from living in accordance with His principles. This includes loving your neighbor as yourself, forgiving those who have wronged you, and serving others with humility and compassion. 1 John 2:3-6 declares, "We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. Whoever says, 'I know him,' but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did."

Finally, cultivate a spirit of gratitude. Gratitude is the recognition of God’s goodness in our lives. It’s about acknowledging the blessings that He has bestowed upon us, both big and small. Take time each day to express your gratitude to God for all that He has done for you. Keep a gratitude journal, write thank-you notes, or simply offer a prayer of thanksgiving. Cultivating a spirit of gratitude will help you to see God’s hand at work in your life and deepen your appreciation for His love and grace.

The Transformative Power of Intimacy

As we draw closer to God, we will inevitably experience a transformation in our lives. Our hearts will be softened, our minds will be renewed, and our spirits will be strengthened. We will begin to see the world through a different lens, a lens of love, compassion, and hope. We will be empowered to live with purpose and passion, knowing that we are not alone on this journey.

Intimacy with God is not a one-time event; it’s a lifelong pursuit. It’s a journey that requires intentionality, perseverance, and a willingness to surrender to God’s will. But the rewards are immeasurable. As we draw closer to God, we will discover the true meaning of life, the depth of His love, and the fullness of His joy. And in that discovery, we will find ourselves transformed into the people He has always intended us to be.

So, take a moment to pause, to quiet your mind, and to listen to the still, small voice within. Allow yourself to be drawn to the Divine, to embrace the journey of intimacy with God, and to experience the transformative power of His love. He is waiting for you, with open arms, ready to embrace you and guide you on this incredible adventure.

Remember that the journey of faith is not about perfection, but about progress. There will be times when you stumble, when you doubt, and when you feel discouraged. But don't give up. God's grace is sufficient for you, and He will never leave your side. Keep pressing on, keep seeking Him, and keep trusting in His love. As Philippians 3:14 encourages, "I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."
