How to Discern If Your Dream Is from God

Understanding God's Guidance in Your Aspirations

It was the start of my junior year in college—a period of significant turmoil marked by a breakup, a change in major, and a severe medical scare. Desperate for a fresh start, I convinced myself that moving to Colorado was God’s will. However, I hadn't genuinely sought His guidance. A wise friend’s probing question, “And how did God tell you?” revealed my error. I hadn’t consulted God but was instead acting on impulse.

Proverbs 19:20-21 advises, "Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future. Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand." This wisdom guided me to seek God's will earnestly.

In our eagerness to pursue dreams, we might mistake our desires for God's calling. Here are some steps to ensure your dreams align with God's will:

  • Pray Earnestly
Regularly communicate with God about your plans. Share your excitement and concerns, and be open to His guidance.

  • Seek Wise Counsel
Consult with spiritually mature individuals who can provide unbiased, godly advice. Proverbs 28:26 reminds us, "Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered."

  • Stay Grounded
Avoid hastily announcing your plans. Allow time for God to confirm His will, ensuring your decisions are not driven by excitement alone.

Statistics reveal that 60% of Christians feel uncertain about interpreting God’s guidance in their lives. Furthermore, a study by Barna Group shows that 58% of young adults seek spiritual counsel from mentors or pastors when making major decisions. These findings emphasize the importance of involving both divine and communal guidance in discerning God's will.

Our unique callings vary; some may be led to international missions, others to different vocations or locations. The critical factor is ensuring the calling is from God, not from personal ambition. By aligning our plans with God’s purpose, we can experience the profound and adventurous journey He has designed for us.

Remember, God’s plan may not always align with our immediate desires, but it promises fulfillment beyond our imagination. Trust in His timing and wisdom.
