Her Strength, His Steady

How biblical trust and Christ-centered courage help wives multiply their husband’s leadership.

It was a sky-blue tandem bike parked on a Florida sidewalk that sparked the metaphor. Two sisters. One seat in front, one in the back. One to steer, one to pedal without control. It was awkward, unnerving, and oddly exhilarating especially for the one in the rear who had to trust, push hard, and lean into every move the front rider made.

Marrying a man, in many ways, is like taking that second seat.

When a woman marries, she doesn’t lose her strength she redirects it. She voluntarily chooses to partner with a man who has been entrusted by God with the leadership of their shared life (Ephesians 5:23). That doesn’t mean she has no power or voice. Quite the opposite. Her position enables her to multiply his strength to add thrust, endurance, balance, and grace. When marriage flows in this God-designed harmony, it becomes a force that moves mountains and generations.

But just as easily, that position can become one of resistance. A wife can halt the ride. She can dig in her heels and steer against his direction. Proverbs 14:1 warns that a woman can “tear down her house with her own hands.” The same strength meant to multiply can, if misapplied, divide.

So how does a wife double her husband’s strength? Scripture, wisdom, and the practical rhythms of life offer clear direction.

1. Cheer Him On

Few things energize a man like the sincere encouragement of his wife. The world may critique him. His work may exhaust him. But one kind word from her can restore clarity and strength.

When a wife chooses gratitude over criticism, praise over nitpicking, and affirmation over silence, she builds her husband’s courage to lead well. It’s not manipulation. It’s motivation.

Proverbs 31:11 says, “The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain.” This kind of trust is born when a man knows his wife is for him verbally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Yes, there’s a time to give feedback, but do so in love and humility. Resist the urge to be his constant corrector. Instead, be the voice that says, “I see you. I believe in you. Thank you for leading.”

2. Pedal Hard in Your Gifts

The second seat on a tandem bike isn’t passive. In fact, it requires just as much, if not more, exertion. Without that extra power, the ride sputters. With it, the bike soars.

Proverbs 31 paints a vivid picture of a woman who pedals hard building businesses, managing a household, raising children, giving generously, speaking wisdom. Her husband is known in the gates because of her (v. 23). Her hard work multiplies their family’s influence and legacy.

A wife who fully engages her God-given gifts extends her husband’s reach. When she brings her energy, insight, creativity, and management to the table, they become a force for good that neither could achieve alone.

3. Follow His Lead

This may be the hardest piece of all. In the tandem of marriage, God calls the husband to lead (Ephesians 5:22–24). That means sometimes he will chart a path the wife wouldn’t have chosen. And yet, submission is the divine design not as subjugation, but as sacred trust in the God who placed him at the handlebars.

A wife’s agreement to follow doesn’t imply blind allegiance. It means she offers input with wisdom, then supports his final call with grace. It means she lays down her right to always be right, and instead chooses unity over control.

And here’s the deeper truth: Submission isn’t ultimately about the man. It’s about trusting Jesus. The call to submit comes not because husbands are perfect but because Christ is.

Trust the One Who Holds the Bike

The tandem bike metaphor only works when you remember who truly holds the map.

Your husband, as fallible and fragile as any man, will make wrong turns. He may miss a sign or take a longer path. But your Savior doesn’t. Jesus, the perfect Leader, sees every pothole ahead. He charts the course. He guarantees the destination.

When you submit to your husband, you are not ultimately putting your faith in him. You’re putting your faith in the God who designed marriage for your good and His glory. And that God never fails.

Your Strength Multiplies His

You were not made to coast. You were made to move to add, to accelerate, to amplify. When a wife chooses to encourage, to engage her gifts, and to follow with faith, she becomes the hidden engine behind a flourishing man. She becomes the helper God envisioned in Genesis 2:18 “a helper fit for him.”

And when that dynamic clicks into place? It’s breathtaking. Not easy. But eternally beautiful.

So wife, don’t underestimate your position. Don’t neglect your power. You were made to double his strength.
