Easter: More Than Candy and Bunnies
True joy blossoms when we focus on the risen Christ.

Beyond the Basket: A Heart Transformed
Easter morning. The thrill of the hunt, the vibrant colors of dyed eggs, the sweet delight of chocolate bunnies. These traditions, woven into the fabric of our childhoods, evoke a sense of joy and anticipation. But what happens when we pause, just for a moment, amidst the sugar rush and consider the profound significance of this day? What happens when we look beyond the basket and see the empty tomb?
Easter is, at its core, a celebration of hope. It’s a declaration that death does not have the final word. It's a testament to the boundless love and power of God, who conquered the grave and offers us the promise of eternal life. It's easy to get caught up in the commercial aspects of the holiday, to focus on the fleeting pleasures that fill our baskets. But true and lasting joy comes from anchoring our hearts in the reality of the resurrection.
This Easter, let’s intentionally shift our focus. Let’s move beyond the superficial and delve into the depths of what this season truly represents. Let’s cultivate a spirit of gratitude for the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and the gift of salvation He offers.
Cultivating Faith This Easter Season
So how can we do this practically? How can we infuse our Easter celebrations with meaning and purpose? Here are a few ideas to get you started:
1. Read the Resurrection Story Together. Take time as a family to read the accounts of Jesus’s death and resurrection from the Gospels (Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, John 20). Discuss the events, ask questions, and reflect on the significance of each detail. Consider using a children’s Bible or a devotional specifically designed for families to make the story accessible and engaging for all ages.
“He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.” - Matthew 28:6
This verse is a powerful reminder that the tomb is empty. Jesus is not a historical figure confined to the past; He is alive and active in the present. Spend time reflecting on the implications of this truth for your life.
2. Create a Resurrection Garden. This is a tangible way to visualize the Easter story. Use a shallow dish or container to create a miniature landscape. Include a small tomb (you can use a rock or a small box), a path leading to the tomb, and some greenery to represent new life. Each day leading up to Easter, add elements to the garden to tell the story of Jesus’s journey to the cross and His glorious resurrection. This hands-on activity can help children (and adults!) connect with the story in a meaningful way.
3. Focus on Service and Compassion. Easter is a time to celebrate the love and grace of God. What better way to honor Him than by extending that same love and grace to others? Consider volunteering at a local soup kitchen, visiting a nursing home, or donating to a charity that serves those in need. Acts of service can be a powerful reminder of the selflessness of Christ and the importance of caring for our neighbors.
4. Incorporate Christian Symbols. Instead of focusing solely on bunnies and eggs, incorporate symbols that represent the true meaning of Easter. A cross, a crown of thorns, or a lamb can serve as visual reminders of Jesus’s sacrifice and victory over death. Use these symbols in your decorations, crafts, and conversations.
5. Share Your Faith. Easter is a wonderful opportunity to share the good news of Jesus Christ with others. Invite friends and neighbors to church, share your personal testimony, or simply talk about the meaning of Easter with those around you. Don’t be afraid to be open and honest about your faith.
6. Pray Expectantly. Take time to pray as a family, thanking God for the gift of salvation and asking Him to open your hearts to the deeper meaning of Easter. Pray for those who do not yet know Christ and ask God to reveal Himself to them. Prayer is a powerful tool that can transform our hearts and minds and draw us closer to God.
Overcoming Through Faith: The Power of the Resurrection
The resurrection is not just a historical event; it’s a living reality that can transform our lives today. It’s a source of hope, strength, and courage in the face of adversity. When we face challenges and difficulties, we can draw strength from the knowledge that Jesus conquered death and offers us the promise of eternal life.
“If we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.” - Romans 6:5
This verse speaks to the transformative power of the resurrection. When we are united with Christ in His death and resurrection, we are given a new identity and a new purpose. We are no longer bound by the chains of sin and death; we are free to live in the fullness of God’s grace.
Consider the story of the disciples after the crucifixion. They were filled with fear, doubt, and despair. They had witnessed the brutal death of their leader and were convinced that all hope was lost. But then, something extraordinary happened. Jesus rose from the dead! This single event transformed them from fearful followers into bold proclaimers of the Gospel. They were willing to risk their lives to share the good news of Jesus Christ with the world. What changed? The resurrection changed everything.
The same power that raised Jesus from the dead is available to us today. We can access this power through faith, prayer, and obedience to God’s Word. When we surrender our lives to Christ, we are empowered to overcome any obstacle and to live a life of purpose and meaning.
Here are some practical ways to apply the power of the resurrection to your life:
1. Confront Your Fears. What are you afraid of? What is holding you back from living the life God has called you to live? The resurrection empowers us to confront our fears and to step out in faith, knowing that God is with us every step of the way. Remember that perfect love casts out fear (1 John 4:18).
2. Forgive Others. Holding onto bitterness and resentment can poison our hearts and minds. The resurrection teaches us the importance of forgiveness. Just as God forgave us through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, we are called to forgive others. Forgiveness is not always easy, but it is essential for our spiritual growth and well-being.
3. Embrace New Beginnings. The resurrection is a symbol of new beginnings. It reminds us that we can always start over, no matter how many mistakes we have made in the past. God’s grace is sufficient to cover our sins and to empower us to live a new life, free from the burdens of guilt and shame.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” - 2 Corinthians 5:17
This verse is a powerful reminder that we are not defined by our past. We are new creations in Christ, with a new identity and a new destiny. Embrace the new life that God has given you and live it to the fullest.
4. Cultivate Gratitude. Take time each day to thank God for the blessings in your life. Gratitude shifts our focus from what we lack to what we have. It helps us to appreciate the simple joys of life and to recognize God’s goodness in all things. A grateful heart is a joyful heart.
5. Trust in God’s Plan. Even when we don’t understand what God is doing, we can trust that He has a plan for our lives. His ways are higher than our ways, and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts (Isaiah 55:9). Surrender your plans to Him and trust that He will lead you on the right path.
6. Persevere in Faith. The Christian life is not always easy. There will be times when we face trials and tribulations. But we can persevere in faith, knowing that God is with us and that He will never abandon us. He is our refuge and our strength, a very present help in times of trouble (Psalm 46:1).
Consider the words of the Apostle Paul: “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body” (2 Corinthians 4:8-10).
Even in the midst of suffering, we can experience the life of Jesus. The resurrection is not just a distant hope; it is a present reality that can empower us to overcome any challenge and to live a life of victory.
A Lasting Transformation
This Easter, let’s choose to focus on the true meaning of the season. Let’s embrace the hope, the joy, and the transformative power of the resurrection. Let’s cultivate a spirit of gratitude, service, and compassion. And let’s allow the risen Christ to transform our hearts and minds, so that we can live a life that is pleasing to Him.
Let the empty tomb be a reminder that anything is possible with God. Let the resurrection be a source of hope, strength, and courage in the face of adversity. And let the love of Christ fill our hearts and minds, so that we can share His good news with the world.
May this Easter season be a time of renewal, transformation, and lasting joy.
