Finding God in the Unfamiliar

Life rarely unfolds according to our meticulously crafted plans. The path we envision, paved with predictability and ease, often veers into unexpected territories. These detours, at times unsettling, can feel jarring. But what if these so-called 'weird' or unconventional moments are precisely where God intends for us to discover profound growth and deeper understanding of His divine purpose?

The familiar can be comforting, a safe harbor in the turbulent seas of existence. Yet, comfort can sometimes breed complacency, hindering our spiritual evolution. It's in stepping outside our comfort zones, in venturing into the unknown, that we truly learn to rely on God's unwavering presence and boundless strength. As Hebrews 11:1 reminds us, "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see." Faith isn't about knowing every step of the way; it's about trusting the One who holds our hand and guides our feet, even when the path ahead is shrouded in mystery.

Think of the apostle Paul. His life was anything but conventional after his encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus. He went from persecuting Christians to becoming one of the most influential figures in Christian history. His journey was filled with trials, tribulations, imprisonments, and shipwrecks. Yet, in every 'weird' or unexpected circumstance, he found opportunities to share the Gospel and draw closer to God. Consider the story of Noah. He was instructed to build an ark, a massive vessel, in the middle of dry land. His actions were undoubtedly considered 'weird' by his contemporaries. They likely mocked and ridiculed him. Yet, Noah's unwavering faith in God's unconventional plan saved him and his family from the devastating flood. His willingness to embrace the 'weird' led to the preservation of humanity and a renewed covenant with God.

Sometimes, God calls us to do things that don't make sense in the eyes of the world. He might ask us to forgive someone who has deeply hurt us, to give generously when we are struggling financially, or to pursue a dream that seems impossible. These actions might appear 'weird' or foolish to others, but they are often precisely what God is calling us to do to demonstrate our faith and trust in Him. As 1 Corinthians 1:27 states, "But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong."

Finding Strength in Surrender

One of the most challenging aspects of embracing the unexpected is surrendering our desire for control. We naturally crave predictability and stability. We want to know what the future holds and to have a sense of mastery over our own lives. However, faith requires us to relinquish control and to trust that God's plan for us is far greater than anything we could imagine for ourselves.

This surrender is not passive resignation. It is an active choice to trust in God's wisdom, even when we don't understand His ways. It is a conscious decision to believe that He is working behind the scenes, orchestrating events for our ultimate good. As Proverbs 3:5-6 advises, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

Think of the woman with the issue of blood in the Gospels. She had suffered for twelve years, spending all her money on doctors, yet she was not healed. Desperate and determined, she pressed through the crowd and touched the hem of Jesus' garment. Immediately, she was healed. Her unconventional act of faith, her willingness to step outside the bounds of social norms, led to a miraculous encounter with the healing power of God. Her story reminds us that sometimes, the 'weirdest' or most unexpected actions can lead to the greatest blessings.

Cultivating a Heart Open to the Unusual

How can we cultivate a heart that is open to the unexpected and receptive to God's unconventional plans? Here are a few practical steps:

• Practice Gratitude: Regularly acknowledge and appreciate the blessings in your life, both big and small. Gratitude shifts our perspective from what we lack to what we have, fostering a sense of contentment and trust.
• Embrace Prayer and Meditation: Spend time in quiet reflection, listening for God's still, small voice. Prayer is not just about asking for things; it's about cultivating a deeper relationship with God and seeking His guidance in all areas of our lives.
• Study Scripture: Immerse yourself in the Word of God, seeking wisdom and understanding. The Bible is a treasure trove of stories and teachings that can help us navigate the challenges of life and discern God's will.
• Seek Wise Counsel: Surround yourself with people who are grounded in faith and who can offer encouragement and support. Iron sharpens iron, and we can learn and grow from the wisdom of others.
• Step Out in Faith: Don't be afraid to take risks and try new things. God often uses unexpected opportunities to stretch our faith and lead us to new levels of growth.

Remember the words of Isaiah 55:8-9: "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the Lord. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts." God's perspective is infinitely greater than our own. He sees the bigger picture, and He knows what is best for us, even when we don't understand. Embrace the unexpected with faith, trust that God is in control, and allow Him to lead you on an extraordinary journey of discovery and growth. Embrace the 'weird,' for it may be the very thing that leads you to your divine destiny.

Ultimately, embracing the unexpected is about trusting that God is working even when we cannot see it. It's about recognizing that His plans are far greater than our own and that He is always guiding us toward our ultimate good. It's about finding joy in the journey, even when the path is uncertain, and knowing that He will never leave us nor forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6). So, embrace the 'weird,' the unconventional, the unexpected, and watch as God transforms your life in ways you never thought possible.

As Romans 12:2 encourages us, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is - his good, pleasing and perfect will." Let us embrace the unexpected, allowing God to mold and shape us into the people He created us to be, even if it means walking a path that seems a little 'weird' to the world around us.
