Facing the Unfinished Task of Global Missions

Why the Great Commission Remains a Call to Action for Christians Today.

The call to global missions is as urgent today as it was when Jesus first commissioned His disciples over 2,000 years ago. Despite the technological advances and the unprecedented access we have to information, the task of spreading the Gospel to all nations remains unfinished. Many parts of the world still have little or no access to the message of Christ, reminding us of the vital role we play in fulfilling the Great Commission.

Understanding the Unfinished Task

In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus commands His followers to “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” This call is not limited to the early disciples but extends to every believer today.

According to the Joshua Project, there are still over 7,000 unreached people groups, comprising more than 3 billion individuals who have never heard the Gospel. These numbers highlight the vastness of the mission field and the critical need for dedicated efforts to reach these populations.

The Urgency of the Mission

The unfinished task is not just a matter of numbers; it’s a matter of urgency. Millions of people live without the hope and salvation found in Jesus Christ. The apostle Paul’s words in Romans 10:14-15 emphasize the importance of sharing the Gospel: “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?”

Every moment counts, and as Christians, we are entrusted with the responsibility to share the life-changing message of Jesus with those who have never heard it. The task is unfinished not because of a lack of interest or effort but because the mission field is vast, and the workers are few.

Overcoming Barriers to Missions

Several barriers contribute to the unfinished task of global missions, including cultural, linguistic, and political challenges. However, these obstacles are not insurmountable. With prayer, strategic planning, and a commitment to cross-cultural understanding, we can overcome these hurdles and bring the Gospel to even the most remote areas.

Technology has become a powerful tool in missions, enabling us to reach people in creative and innovative ways. Social media, digital Bibles, and online platforms provide unprecedented opportunities to share the Gospel and disciple new believers.

The Role of Every Believer

The Great Commission is not reserved for missionaries alone; every believer has a role to play in this unfinished task. Whether through prayer, financial support, or active involvement in missions, each of us can contribute to the spread of the Gospel. The local church plays a pivotal role in mobilizing and equipping believers for missions, providing resources, training, and support for those called to go.

Prayer is a powerful and essential aspect of missions. By interceding for unreached people groups, praying for missionaries, and seeking God’s guidance, we participate in the spiritual battle for souls. Financial support also enables missionaries and mission organizations to continue their work, providing resources for translation projects, outreach programs, and humanitarian efforts.

Conclusion

The task of global missions remains unfinished, but it is not impossible. As followers of Christ, we are called to embrace the Great Commission with urgency and dedication. By overcoming barriers, leveraging technology, and mobilizing the body of Christ, we can reach the unreached and fulfill Jesus’ command to make disciples of all nations.

Now is the time to step forward, whether by going, sending, or supporting. Let us face the task unfinished with renewed commitment, trusting that God will use our efforts to bring His message of hope and salvation to the ends of the earth.
