Finding God in the Stillness
Trusting the divine pause is as vital as embracing action.

The Whisper in the Waiting
Life often feels like a race, a constant striving for the next goal, the next achievement. We're bombarded with messages telling us to hustle, to grind, to never stop moving. But what happens when God calls us to a halt? What happens when the path forward seems blocked, and all we can do is wait?
Waiting is rarely comfortable. It can feel like a punishment, a sign of failure, or a waste of precious time. Our culture doesn't value stillness; it glorifies activity. Yet, it is often in the quiet spaces, the moments of enforced stillness, that God speaks most clearly. It's in the waiting that we discover depths of faith we never knew we possessed.
Think of Elijah, hiding in the cave after his triumph over the prophets of Baal (1 Kings 19). He expected God to be in the earthquake, the wind, or the fire, but God was in the gentle whisper. Similarly, we often expect God to show up in dramatic ways, in miraculous events. But more often than not, He reveals Himself in the quiet moments, in the stillness of our hearts when we finally cease striving and simply listen.
The apostle Paul, in his letter to the Philippians, urges us to be anxious for nothing, but in everything, through prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let our requests be made known to God (Philippians 4:6). This isn't a passive resignation, but an active surrender. It's about releasing our anxieties and trusting that God is working, even when we can't see it. Waiting, therefore, becomes an act of worship, a demonstration of our faith in His timing and His wisdom.
The Purpose of the Pause
Waiting is not merely a passive exercise; it's an active process of spiritual growth. It's a time of preparation, refinement, and realignment. It’s an opportunity to examine our hearts, to identify areas of weakness, and to seek God’s guidance for the journey ahead.
Consider the story of Joseph. He endured years of slavery and imprisonment before finally ascending to a position of power in Egypt. During those years of waiting, he could have become bitter and resentful. But instead, he chose to trust God. He used his gifts and abilities to serve others, even in the most difficult circumstances. And when the time was right, God opened the door for him to fulfill his destiny (Genesis 37-50).
Joseph’s story teaches us that waiting is not wasted time. It’s a crucial part of God’s plan. It's a time of preparation, a time of character development, and a time of building resilience. As Romans 5:3-5 reminds us, “suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”
Waiting also allows us to develop a deeper understanding of God's character. We learn that He is faithful, even when circumstances seem bleak. We discover that He is sovereign, even when we don't understand His ways. And we come to realize that His timing is always perfect, even when it doesn't align with our own expectations.
Overcoming the Challenges of Waiting
Waiting can be challenging, especially in a fast-paced world. It requires patience, perseverance, and a deep trust in God. Here are some practical ways to navigate the difficulties of waiting:
- Embrace Prayer and Scripture: Immerse yourself in prayer and the Word of God. Use this time to draw closer to Him and to seek His guidance. Ask for wisdom, discernment, and strength to endure the waiting period. The Psalms are a particularly rich source of comfort and encouragement during times of waiting. Psalm 27:14 encourages us to “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.”
- Practice Gratitude: Focus on the blessings in your life, no matter how small they may seem. Gratitude shifts your perspective and helps you to see God’s hand at work, even in the midst of difficult circumstances. Keep a gratitude journal, and make a conscious effort to acknowledge the good things in your life each day. Thankfulness opens our hearts to receive even more blessings.
- Serve Others: Take your focus off yourself by serving others. Volunteer your time, offer your skills, or simply lend a listening ear to someone in need. Serving others reminds us that we are not alone in our struggles and that we have something valuable to offer the world. It helps us to cultivate empathy and compassion, and it gives us a sense of purpose during times of waiting. As Galatians 6:2 says, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
- Seek Community: Connect with other believers who can offer support, encouragement, and accountability. Share your struggles with them and ask for prayer. Being part of a supportive community reminds us that we are not alone in our journey and that we have others who are walking alongside us. Hebrews 10:24-25 urges us to “spur one another on toward love and good deeds… encouraging one another.”
- Trust in God's Unfolding Plan: Remember that God has a plan for your life, and He is working all things together for your good (Romans 8:28). Even when you can't see the big picture, trust that He is in control and that He will ultimately bring about His purposes. Surrender your plans and expectations to Him, and allow Him to lead you on the path that He has ordained for you.
The Reward of Waiting
Waiting is not easy, but it is always worth it. When we choose to trust God in the silence, He will reveal Himself to us in new and profound ways. He will strengthen our faith, deepen our character, and prepare us for the blessings He has in store.
Consider the example of Simeon and Anna in Luke 2. Both had waited patiently for the Messiah, and their faithfulness was rewarded when they encountered the infant Jesus in the temple. Their stories remind us that God honors those who wait on Him with unwavering faith. He fulfills His promises in His perfect timing.
Waiting is not a sign of weakness; it is a testament to our faith. It's an acknowledgement that we are not in control, but that God is. It's a surrender of our will to His. And it's an invitation to experience His presence in the stillness of our hearts.
Therefore, embrace the waiting. See it as an opportunity for growth, a time of preparation, and an invitation to draw closer to God. Trust that He is working, even when you can't see it. And know that He will ultimately reward your faithfulness with blessings beyond your wildest dreams. As Isaiah 40:31 promises, “those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
In the quiet moments, in the forced pauses, God refines us. He whispers direction, strengthens our resolve, and deepens our understanding of His unwavering love. Embrace the stillness, for it is there that you will truly find Him.
“Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).
