Finding Strength in Mental Illness

How Personal Struggles Can Draw Us Closer to God and Help Others.

Mental illness is a challenging journey, yet it can profoundly shape our character and faith. Andrea Jongbloed shares how living with bipolar disorder has transformed her life in three significant ways.

1. Cultivating Empathy for the Marginalized

Growing up in a privileged environment, it was easy to overlook the struggles of others. However, living with a mental illness has helped Andrea develop deep empathy for those who are marginalized. This experience has aligned her more closely with Christ's teachings, urging us to advocate for those who face hardships. Statistics show that approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. experience mental illness each year, highlighting the importance of empathy and support for this community.

2. Learning to Rely Solely on God

Andrea's bipolar disorder has taught her to rely completely on God. During her lowest moments, God's presence provided hope and peace. This reliance is echoed in 2 Corinthians 12:9, where Paul writes, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." This scripture reassures us that our weaknesses can draw us closer to God's strength.

3. Advocating for Mental Health Awareness

Stigma around mental illness remains a significant issue. Andrea has encountered negative reactions but uses these moments as opportunities to educate others about mental health challenges. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 17% of youth experience a mental health disorder, underscoring the need for continued advocacy and awareness. Jesus often aligned himself with outcasts, teaching us to combat stigma and advocate for those who suffer.

Andrea's journey shows that God uses our struggles to shape us into compassionate and reliant followers of Christ. Embracing our challenges can lead to greater empathy, reliance on God, and advocacy for others. Her response to the question, "If you could wish away your mental illness, would you?" remains a resolute no, as these experiences have made her who she is today.
