Discovering the Preacher Who Speaks to Your Heart
How do we find a preacher that truly feeds our soul.

In today’s world, we have access to thousands of sermons and Bible teachers at the click of a button. From renowned pastors with global ministries to local church leaders, the abundance of spiritual resources can be overwhelming. With so many voices available, the question arises: how do we find the preacher that truly feeds our soul?
Finding the right preacher is not about popularity or charisma it’s about connecting with someone whose teaching leads you deeper into the Word of God and draws you closer to Christ. But how do we discern which preacher is best suited for us?
The Preacher’s Role in Our Spiritual Growth
Preachers play a significant role in the spiritual lives of believers. They are called to teach, rebuke, correct, and train in righteousness, as 2 Timothy 3:16 reminds us. A good preacher does more than deliver a moving message; they help us to understand the truth of God’s Word, applying it to our everyday lives and challenging us to live in greater obedience to Christ.
One of the reasons finding the right preacher is so important is because teaching influences how we see God and how we walk out our faith. Scripture warns us in James 3:1, "Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly." The weight of responsibility on preachers is immense, as they guide their congregations through the ups and downs of life with biblical wisdom.
But no preacher is perfect. The Bible gives us only one flawless teacher: Jesus Christ. Every preacher, no matter how gifted, has their limitations. As followers of Christ, we must ultimately look beyond the human vessel to the One who gives life through His Word.
What Makes a Good Preacher?
When searching for a preacher that speaks to your heart, there are several key factors to consider. First and foremost, the message should be biblically sound. In an age where it’s easy to become distracted by emotional or motivational speeches, we need preaching that is grounded in Scripture. 2 Timothy 4:2-4 instructs, "Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction."
A preacher should never shy away from addressing the hard truths of the Bible. Whether it’s calling out sin or encouraging repentance, solid biblical teaching is not afraid of confrontation when it comes to aligning with the truth of God’s Word. A 2020 Barna Group survey found that 56% of Christians in the U.S. prefer sermons that address life’s challenges through a biblical lens, emphasizing the need for Scripture-focused preaching in today's culture.
In addition to sound doctrine, a good preacher should also have a heart for their congregation. Ephesians 4:12 speaks of church leaders being called "to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up." A preacher who loves their congregation will invest time in understanding the spiritual needs of their listeners, using their platform to equip and encourage them to grow in faith.
Preaching Style and Personal Connection
Each preacher has a unique style, and some will naturally resonate with you more than others. Some of us are moved by expository preaching, where the Word is unpacked verse by verse. Others might connect more with thematic preaching, which dives deep into specific issues or topics. There is no “one-size-fits-all” when it comes to preaching styles, but it’s important to find a preacher whose delivery helps you connect with Scripture in a meaningful way.
Connection isn’t just about the words spoken—it’s about how the Holy Spirit moves through the message to speak directly to your heart. A preacher might have great theological depth, but if their style doesn’t engage you or help you absorb the message, it may not be the best fit for your spiritual growth.
According to a Lifeway Research study from 2019, over 83% of churchgoers stated that the content of the sermon was the most important factor in keeping them engaged with their faith community. Yet, personal connection and the Holy Spirit’s guidance are equally important in discerning the right preacher for you.
Testing the Spirit Behind the Message
It’s important to remember that no preacher, regardless of their influence or fame, should ever replace our personal relationship with God. 1 John 4:1 urges believers, “Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.” The best preachers point their listeners not to themselves, but to Christ. They encourage their congregation to be like the Bereans in Acts 17:11, who “received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.”
A red flag is when a preacher’s message focuses more on themselves than on the Word of God. If a sermon seems more like a motivational speech or is consistently centered on personal stories without strong biblical backing, it might be time to reevaluate. The goal of any good preacher is to magnify Christ, not their own platform.
It’s also wise to be cautious of teachings that feel “new” or stray far from orthodox Christianity. While there is room for fresh revelation and deeper understanding, any message that contradicts the Bible or elevates personal opinion above Scripture should be approached with discernment. A preacher who leads their flock in truth will always direct their listeners back to the timeless truths of the Word.
Allowing the Holy Spirit to Guide You
Finding the right preacher is ultimately a matter of prayer and discernment. Just as God leads us in other areas of our lives, He will guide us to the teaching that will most benefit our spiritual growth. John 16:13 promises, "But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth." By remaining open to the Holy Spirit’s leading, you can trust that God will connect you with the preacher or ministry that aligns with where He is taking you in your journey of faith.
Don’t be discouraged if it takes time to find the right spiritual leader whose messages consistently speak to your heart. The beauty of our relationship with God is that He provides for all our needs, including the spiritual guidance we seek.
