Respect and Reciprocity for Authors
Four Principles for Reading Well.

In an era where information is abundant, discerning the true intent behind written words is crucial. Misinterpretations can lead to misunderstandings, especially when engaging with Scripture or theological writings. To navigate this, we can apply the "Golden Rule" to reading: Do unto authors as you would have them do unto you. This approach fosters respect for the author's intended message and enhances our comprehension.
Texts don't generate meaning on their own; authors do. When we say, "The Bible says," we're actually referring to what the human authors, inspired by God, intended to communicate. Understanding that meaning originates from the author helps us focus on discerning their intended message rather than imposing our own interpretations.
2. Distinguish Between Meaning and Significance
It's essential to differentiate between what the author meant (meaning) and how that meaning applies to various contexts (significance). While an author's intended message remains consistent over time, its relevance can vary across different situations. By distinguishing these concepts, we respect the original message while thoughtfully considering its application today.
Interpreting a text shouldn't involve speculating about the author's personal motives or psychological state. Instead, focus on the public message conveyed through their words. This approach prevents us from projecting our assumptions onto the text and encourages a more accurate understanding of the author's intent.
4. Embrace Humility and Courtesy in Reading
Approaching texts with humility acknowledges that we don't possess all knowledge and that authors have valuable insights to offer. Courtesy involves making a sincere effort to grasp what the author intended to communicate, just as we would want others to understand our words accurately. This respectful engagement fosters deeper comprehension and meaningful dialogue.
Conclusion
Applying these principles transforms our reading into an act of empathy and respect. By earnestly seeking to understand authors on their terms, we enrich our learning and cultivate a more profound appreciation for diverse perspectives.
