Four Benefits of Facing and Overcoming Problems
Embracing Challenges Through a Faithful Perspective

We all face problems in life, and often, we view them as obstacles that hinder our progress. However, as Christians, we are called to look at problems differently than the world does. Here are four reasons why our problems can actually help us grow and align with God’s purpose.
1. Meant for Evil, Used for Good
The story of Joseph is a powerful example of how God can use even the most challenging circumstances for good. If Joseph had not been thrown into a pit, sold into slavery, and falsely accused, he wouldn't have been in a position to save many lives, including those of his own family. When Joseph finally confronted his brothers, he said, "You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today" (Genesis 50:20). Joseph’s story shows us that God can turn our struggles into opportunities for His greater plan. The cross, which was meant for evil, is the greatest example of this, leading to the salvation of humanity.
2. Finding Solutions
Problems often force us to find solutions that we might otherwise overlook. For instance, struggling with a challenging subject in school, like algebra, can lead to a deeper understanding and eventual mastery of the material. Similarly, Thomas Edison failed thousands of times before inventing the light bulb, but each failure brought him closer to success. Romans 5:3-4 says, "Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope." Our struggles can build resilience and lead to innovative solutions, helping us grow in ways we never imagined.
3. Getting Our Attention
Sometimes, problems are a way for God to get our attention and draw us back to Him. When life’s difficulties pile up, it may be a sign that we need to refocus on our relationship with God. Hebrews 12:6 reminds us, "The Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son." A couple’s disrupted vacation due to a medical emergency that revealed a life-threatening condition is a reminder that what seems like a problem may be a divine intervention for our good. God uses these moments to remind us of His presence and to steer us back to the path He has set for us.
4. Humbling Us
Problems have a way of humbling us, stripping away our pride and bringing us to our knees. In times of trouble, we are reminded of our dependence on God. James 4:10 encourages us, "Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up." Just as coal under pressure becomes a diamond, and a grain of sand in an oyster forms a pearl, our struggles can transform us into something precious in God’s eyes. Romans 8:28 assures us that "in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." When we embrace humility, we open ourselves to God’s transforming work in our lives.
Conclusion
Jesus didn’t see the cross as a problem to solve but as a mission to fulfill for our sake. His crucifixion, seen as a defeat by many, resulted in the greatest victory of all eternal life for those who trust in Him. "What they meant for evil did infinite good, because those who trust in Christ, even if they die, will yet live again" (John 11:25-26). By embracing our problems and seeing them as opportunities for growth and alignment with God’s will, we can turn our struggles into stepping stones toward a deeper relationship with Him.
