The Innate Worship in Every Child
Guiding Our Children Toward True Worship.

Every child is born with an innate sense of wonder and a natural inclination to worship. This truth is woven into the fabric of human nature, reflecting our deepest need to connect with something greater than ourselves. However, the object of that worship is not automatically directed toward God. As parents, mentors, and believers, we have a crucial role in guiding our children toward true worship—the worship of the one true God.
From their earliest years, children are drawn to things that captivate their hearts and imaginations. Whether it’s a favorite toy, a beloved superhero, or the admiration of a parent, these objects of affection reveal a profound truth: children are worshippers. The question is not if they will worship, but what or whom they will worship.
Scripture provides us with clear guidance on this matter. Deuteronomy 6:5-7 instructs, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." This passage highlights the importance of intentionally directing our children’s hearts toward God in every aspect of daily life.
Children are highly impressionable, absorbing the values and priorities of those around them. If we, as parents and guardians, model a life of worship that places God at the center, our children are more likely to follow suit. This doesn’t mean merely attending church or participating in religious activities, but truly living out a relationship with God that permeates every area of life. When children see us worship God in spirit and truth (John 4:23), they learn to value Him above all else.
It’s essential to recognize that children are not passive observers in the world of worship; they are active participants. Whether it’s through singing songs, praying, or even the simple act of marveling at God’s creation, children are capable of expressing genuine worship. Encouraging this natural expression of worship can help lay a strong spiritual foundation that will guide them throughout their lives.
But as with all aspects of spiritual growth, children face distractions and competing influences. The world is full of idols—success, popularity, material possessions—that can easily capture their attention and hearts. In an age dominated by technology and media, these idols can become even more enticing, making it all the more critical for us to actively steer our children toward the worship of God.
One way to do this is by cultivating a home environment that is rich in worship and biblical truth. This can include family devotions, prayer times, and discussions about God’s Word that are tailored to their age and understanding. Teaching children the stories of the Bible, singing worship songs together, and helping them see God’s hand in everyday life are practical steps that can nurture a heart of worship.
Moreover, it’s important to engage in open conversations about the nature of true worship. Children should understand that worship is not just about external actions but about the heart’s posture before God. It’s about loving God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and allowing that love to shape our lives.
As children grow, they will inevitably encounter other worldviews and temptations that challenge their faith. However, if they have been grounded in a genuine love for God and have seen authentic worship modeled in their homes, they will be better equipped to discern what is worthy of their worship and what is not.
Ultimately, our goal as parents and mentors is to point our children to Jesus, who is worthy of all worship. He alone can satisfy the deepest longings of their hearts and guide them into the life of true worship that they were created for. By nurturing this desire for God in their early years, we set them on a path that leads to everlasting joy and fulfillment in His presence.
