Husbands Are Called to Make Their Wives Shine
A godly husband reflects Christ’s love by leading, serving, and strengthening his wife with joy and humility.

In every season of life, there are leaders who leave a lasting mark not because of fame or charisma, but because they make those under their care shine. For one man, this truth became clear in childhood football and again in ministry during college. The pattern was unmistakable: great leadership brings out the best in others. And nowhere is this truer, more needed, and more God-honoring than in marriage.
Husband, you are called to be that kind of leader
A husband who makes his wife shine does not dominate, diminish, or defer his responsibility. He leads with purpose, sacrifices with joy, and sees his wife as both a gift and a co-laborer in the mission of God. Here are four Christ-centered ways husbands can make their wives shine.
1. Strive for a Higher Purpose
What animates your life as a husband? A comfortable home, a predictable future, and a picture-perfect family may look successful, but they won’t satisfy the deeper call of marriage. If your wife loves Christ, she won’t be content with anything less than a life that counts for His glory.
Ephesians 2:10 reminds us that we are God’s workmanship, created for good works. Matthew 28 calls us to make disciples. Your marriage isn’t just a romantic partnership it’s a kingdom mission. And that mission is big enough to require your wife’s full partnership.
Husbands should lead their families with spiritual clarity and courage. This includes the practical choice of joining and serving in a strong, gospel-preaching church. Christ grows and matures us through His body, and in that context, your wife will be equipped and encouraged to shine for His name.
2. Win Her Heart Again and Again
Do you still tell her you love her?
God Himself, though unchanging, reaffirms His promises again and again to His people. Likewise, your wife needs to hear not just assume your commitment and affection. Words matter. Assurances matter. Especially in seasons of stress, conflict, or change.
Speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). Affirm her gifts. Express your admiration. Be emotionally available and spiritually intentional. When difficulties arise, reaffirm your vow: “I’m with you. I love you. I’m not going anywhere.”
And yes, sometimes humor helps too. One husband quipped to his wife, “If you ever decide to leave me, I’m going with you.” Beneath the laugh is a powerful message: covenant commitment is non-negotiable.
3. Serve Her with Christlike Love
Biblical love isn’t measured by how much you say but by how much you serve.
First Corinthians 13 describes love with verbs, not adjectives. It is patient. It is kind. It bears. It believes. It endures. And above all, it acts.
Husbands are called to love their wives as Christ loved the church (Ephesians 5:25). That means sacrificial, steady, sanctifying love. Your wife should never feel like a burden. Serving her should be your joy.
One wife once said of her husband, “I’ve never once felt from him that it was a burden to serve me.” What a beautiful testimony of Christlike love! That’s the kind of love that makes a woman feel safe, cherished, and strong.
And when she sins or struggles, be the friend who draws near, not the judge who pulls away. As Christ does not shame His bride but sanctifies her, so must you. Be the instrument of grace in her life, washing her in the Word, praying for her, and showing her mercy.
4. Strengthen Her in Weakness
Every marriage reveals weakness. But a godly husband doesn’t exploit or ignore it—he strengthens his wife through it.
Philippians 2:4 calls believers to look not only to their own interests but to the interests of others. That begins at home. Use your strength to lift her up, not weigh her down.
Is your wife gifted in counseling? Help her grow. Is she nervous to teach? Encourage her voice. One missionary husband did this for his wife in Haiti, cheering her on as she began teaching local women in a new language. Over time, her confidence and fluency grew. Now she blesses a village that once had no such resource. That’s what Christlike support looks like.
Also, protect her from burnout. A wife and mother often juggles more than anyone sees homeschooling, cooking, cleaning, counseling, organizing, and more. Help her discern when to say no. Serve her when she’s stretched. Let your leadership include protecting her margins so she can flourish, not just function.
A Privileged Calling
Marriage is not about domination. It’s about devotion.
Husbands, making your wife shine is not only your duty it’s your honor. She is your co-heir in the grace of life (1 Peter 3:7). She is the daughter of the King, entrusted to your leadership. She is the helper God gave you because He knew you couldn’t fulfill your calling alone.
This is a holy trust. One day, you will give an account not just for how well you provided, but for how deeply you loved. Not just for what you built, but for how you helped her shine.
So love her. Lead her. Strengthen her. And let your home be a living picture of the gospel, where Christ’s sacrificial love is on full displa shaping your wife, blessing your family, and giving glory to God.
