The Six Hallmarks of Dysfunctional Leadership

Identifying and Addressing Spiritual Dangers in Leadership.

The Apostle Paul's warning to the Ephesian elders in Acts 20:29–30 serves as a timeless caution for church leaders: "I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them." This admonition underscores the reality that threats to the church can emerge not only from external sources but also from within its own leadership.

Recognizing Internal Threats

While vigilance against external challenges is essential, leaders must also engage in self-examination to prevent becoming conduits of spiritual harm. Identifying and addressing personal vulnerabilities is crucial in safeguarding the integrity of one's ministry.

Six Warning Signs of Diseased Leadership

  • Pride: An inflated sense of self-importance can lead to a "Diotrephes" complex, characterized by a desire to be preeminent and a resistance to correction (3 John 9). Such pride distances leaders from accountability and fosters spiritual decay.

  • Negligence: Becoming consumed with ministry duties at the expense of personal spiritual disciplines results in a superficial relationship with God, undermining the authenticity of one's leadership.

  • Isolation: Withdrawing from meaningful relationships and accountability structures creates an environment where unhealthy behaviors can flourish unchecked.

  • Entitlement: Believing that one's position justifies special treatment or exemptions from standards leads to ethical compromises and erodes trust.

  • Manipulation: Using one's position to control or exploit others for personal gain reflects a departure from servant leadership and damages the community.

  • Moral Compromise: Engaging in behaviors contrary to biblical standards not only disqualifies leaders but also brings reproach upon the church.

Preventative Measures

  • Cultivate Humility: Regularly reflect on one's dependence on God's grace and seek feedback from trusted individuals to maintain a humble posture.

  • Prioritize Personal Devotion: Ensure that personal time with God remains a non-negotiable aspect of daily life, fueling genuine ministry.

  • Foster Accountability: Engage with peers and mentors who can provide honest assessments and support.

  • Embrace Transparency: Maintain openness in actions and decisions to build trust and deter misconduct.

Conclusion

The health of a church is intricately linked to the spiritual well-being of its leaders. By vigilantly monitoring and addressing internal warning signs, leaders can prevent becoming the very "wolves" that Paul cautioned against, thereby preserving the integrity and mission of the church.
