The Unexpected Joy of Staying Behind

Embracing the call to release our children for the sake of Christ's mission.

In the Gospel of Matthew, we encounter a poignant scene: Zebedee, a seasoned fisherman, watches as his sons, James and John, leave their nets and him to follow Jesus (Matthew 4:21–22). As a father, Zebedee likely envisioned his sons continuing the family trade, providing support in his later years. Yet, in a moment, that future shifted as they responded to Christ's call.

The Cost of Discipleship

Jesus' invitation to follow Him often requires significant sacrifices, not only from those who go but also from those who stay behind. In Luke 14:26–27, Jesus speaks of the necessity to "hate" one's family and even one's own life to be His disciple. This "hatred" is not about animosity but about prioritizing Christ above all earthly relationships. For parents, this means embracing the reality that their children may be called to serve God in ways that lead them far from home.

Embracing the Role of Being Left Behind

As parents, releasing our children to follow Jesus wholeheartedly can be both a challenge and a profound joy. It involves trusting God's plan for their lives, even when it diverges from our expectations. This act of letting go is a form of bearing our own cross, aligning our desires with God's greater purpose.

Finding Joy in Sacrifice

The paradox of the Christian faith is that true joy often emerges from sacrifice. By encouraging and supporting our children to pursue their calling, we participate in the advancement of God's kingdom. Our willingness to be "left behind" becomes a testament to our faith in God's sovereignty and goodness.

Conclusion

Zebedee's silent acquiescence to his sons' departure serves as a powerful example for modern Christian parents. Embracing the role of being left behind, we find joy in knowing that our children are following the greatest Treasure Jesus Christ.
