Embrace the Journey, Trust the Shepherd

Knowing God's unwavering presence transforms youthful uncertainty into confident faith.

A Letter to Your Younger Self

If you could whisper wisdom into the ear of your 21-year-old self, what would you say? What lessons learned through trials, triumphs, and quiet moments of reflection would you impart? This question resonates deeply, because it speaks to the universal human experience of growth, change, and the enduring power of faith.

Imagine sitting across from your younger self, eyes wide with dreams and perhaps a touch of apprehension. What words of encouragement would you offer? What truths would you share to illuminate the path ahead?

So many of us look back on our early twenties as a pivotal time, a crossroads where decisions shape the trajectory of our lives. It's a period marked by exploration, self-discovery, and the often-daunting task of forging our own identities. We grapple with questions of purpose, relationships, and the ever-present search for meaning.

Looking back, we see the missteps we took, the opportunities we missed, and the lessons we learned the hard way. But more importantly, we recognize the hand of God guiding us, even when we were unaware of His presence. We see how He used our mistakes to mold us, our challenges to strengthen us, and our heartaches to draw us closer to Him.

Here’s the advice I would give to my younger self, and perhaps it will resonate with you as well.

Cultivate a Deeper Relationship with God

At 21, the world feels vast and full of possibilities. It's easy to get caught up in the pursuit of success, relationships, and material possessions. But the most important investment you can make is in your relationship with God. Spend time in prayer, seeking His guidance and wisdom. Immerse yourself in His Word, allowing it to shape your thoughts, actions, and desires. As James 4:8 says, "Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you." This isn't just about attending church or following religious rituals; it's about cultivating a genuine, intimate connection with the Creator of the universe.

Imagine your life as a garden. Your relationship with God is the life-giving water that nourishes the plants, allowing them to flourish and bear fruit. Without that constant nourishment, the garden withers and dies. In the same way, without a strong foundation in faith, we can easily become overwhelmed by the challenges of life and lose sight of our true purpose.

Don't be afraid to ask questions, to wrestle with doubts, and to seek understanding. God welcomes our inquiries and uses them to deepen our faith. Explore different aspects of your faith, read theological works, and engage in conversations with other believers. The more you learn about God, the more you will love Him and the more confident you will be in His plan for your life.

Embrace Imperfection and Learn from Mistakes

The pressure to be perfect can be overwhelming, especially in your early twenties. You may feel like you need to have all the answers, make all the right choices, and present a flawless image to the world. But the truth is, everyone makes mistakes. It's part of being human. Instead of striving for perfection, embrace imperfection and learn from your mistakes. See them as opportunities for growth and refinement.

Remember the words of Romans 8:28: "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." Even your mistakes can be used by God for your good. He can take the broken pieces of your life and create something beautiful. Don't let guilt or shame hold you back from moving forward. Confess your sins, receive God's forgiveness, and learn from your experiences.

One practical way to embrace imperfection is to practice self-compassion. Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would offer to a friend. When you make a mistake, don't beat yourself up about it. Acknowledge it, learn from it, and move on. Remember that God's grace is sufficient for you, even in your weakness.

Value Authentic Relationships

Surround yourself with people who love you, support you, and encourage you in your faith. Seek out mentors who can offer guidance and wisdom. Invest in relationships that are built on honesty, trust, and mutual respect. Avoid toxic relationships that drain your energy and undermine your self-worth. As Proverbs 27:17 says, "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another."

Authentic relationships are essential for our emotional and spiritual well-being. They provide us with a sense of belonging, support, and accountability. They challenge us to grow, to become better versions of ourselves, and to live out our faith in practical ways. Don't be afraid to be vulnerable and share your struggles with trusted friends. They can offer encouragement, perspective, and prayer support.

Building strong relationships takes time and effort. It requires intentionality, communication, and a willingness to be present for others. Make time for the people who matter most to you, even when life gets busy. Invest in their lives, celebrate their successes, and support them through their challenges. Remember that the greatest gift you can give someone is your time and attention.

Embrace Uncertainty with Faith

The future can seem daunting and uncertain, especially in your early twenties. You may feel pressure to have all the answers, to know exactly what you want to do with your life, and to achieve certain milestones by a certain age. But the truth is, life is full of surprises, both good and bad. Instead of trying to control everything, embrace uncertainty with faith. Trust that God has a plan for your life, even when you can't see it.

Proverbs 3:5-6 offers profound guidance: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." This doesn't mean that you shouldn't make plans or set goals. It simply means that you should hold your plans loosely, knowing that God may have something different in store for you. Be open to new opportunities, even if they don't fit neatly into your preconceived notions of what your life should look like.

One way to embrace uncertainty is to focus on the present moment. Instead of worrying about the future, be fully present in the here and now. Savor the small joys, appreciate the beauty around you, and be grateful for the blessings in your life. As Matthew 6:34 reminds us, "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

Discover and Use Your Gifts

Each of us has been given unique gifts and talents by God. Take the time to discover what your gifts are and how you can use them to serve others. Don't compare yourself to others or try to be someone you're not. Embrace your individuality and find ways to express your creativity and passion. As 1 Peter 4:10 says, "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms."

Your gifts may be obvious or they may be hidden. Take time to experiment with different activities, explore new interests, and seek feedback from others. Pay attention to what you enjoy doing, what you're good at, and what makes you feel alive. Once you've identified your gifts, find ways to use them to make a difference in the world. Volunteer your time, offer your skills, or create something new that benefits others.

Remember that your gifts are not just for your own benefit. They are meant to be shared with the world. When you use your gifts to serve others, you are not only fulfilling your purpose, but you are also bringing glory to God.

Practice Gratitude Daily

Cultivate an attitude of gratitude in all circumstances. Take time each day to reflect on the blessings in your life, both big and small. Keep a gratitude journal, write thank-you notes, or simply express your appreciation to others. As 1 Thessalonians 5:18 instructs, "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus."

Gratitude has a powerful effect on our mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. It helps us to focus on the positive aspects of our lives, to appreciate what we have, and to cultivate a sense of contentment. It also helps us to overcome negative emotions such as anger, resentment, and envy.

Even in the midst of difficult circumstances, there is always something to be grateful for. Look for the silver linings, the small moments of grace, and the lessons you are learning. Remember that God is always with you, even in the darkest of times. His love is unwavering, His grace is sufficient, and His promises are true.

The Journey Continues

If I could go back and speak to my 21-year-old self, these are the words I would share. These are the lessons I have learned through years of experience, through moments of joy and sorrow, and through the unwavering presence of God in my life. I hope they will encourage you on your own journey of faith, growth, and discovery. Remember that you are not alone. God is with you every step of the way, guiding you, protecting you, and loving you unconditionally. Trust in Him, and He will lead you to a future filled with purpose, joy, and fulfillment.

As Psalm 23:1-3 so beautifully states, "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake." Lean into His guidance, embrace His love, and trust that He will never leave you nor forsake you.
