Life Will Not Slow Down

What if the chaos you’re waiting to escape is the very place where God wants to meet you?

There’s always a reason to wait. Maybe it’s your job. Your health. Your inbox. Maybe you’re between something seasons, relationships, responsibilities. Maybe you’re hoping that, someday soon, things will finally settle down.

But here's a hard truth that too many people learn too late: life is not going to calm down.

The serene version of adulthood that many were sold where your days flow with ease, your to-do list stays manageable, and your mind is finally clear doesn’t really exist. The emails will keep coming. The plans will keep shifting. The interruptions won’t stop. And if we’re not careful, we’ll live our entire lives waiting for peace to begin before we start living with purpose.

Laura Berman Fortgang, an executive coach and author of Now What? 90 Days to a New Life Direction, puts it bluntly: “The idea that you have to wait until everything is stable before showing up for your life is not just unrealistic it’s a distraction.”

In other words, your life isn’t on pause. It’s not waiting for a calmer season. This is the season. The chaos doesn’t cancel your calling it might actually be the context in which God plans to do His greatest work.

Chaos Isn’t the Enemy

So many today live with the assumption that once they hit a certain milestone land the job, pay off the debt, figure out their schedule then they’ll finally be ready to say yes to God’s plans. But Scripture tells a different story.

The disciples weren’t called in moments of ease. They were in the middle of their work when Jesus walked by and said, “Follow me.” Their nets were still wet. Their futures were undefined. They didn’t have answers just a command.

And that’s how God usually works. Think of Moses, who was tending sheep when the bush caught fire. Or Gideon, hiding in fear when God called him “mighty warrior.” Or Mary, a young, unmarried girl visited by an angel with news that would change the world. God moves not when we’re ready, but when He is and He’s never late.

Start Where You Are

Instead of waiting for a more convenient season, the invitation is to begin where you are. Right now. Not when the stress is gone. Not when your house is clean. Not when you’ve achieved inbox zero. But now in the middle of dishes, doubts, and deadlines.

Fortgang emphasizes that leading yourself through uncertainty doesn’t mean having all the answers. “It means being willing to act even when you don’t.” It’s about learning to move forward with purpose, even when the path isn’t clear.

It might look like applying for the job even though you're afraid. Starting the project even though you feel unqualified. Joining the small group even if your schedule is already packed. It’s about saying yes to the things that matter most not someday, but today.

And this isn’t a pitch for hustle culture. This isn’t about cramming more into your calendar or performing your way to peace. This is about refusing to let busyness and chaos define your spiritual life. Because peace isn’t found after the clutter is cleared. It’s found in the clutter in the presence of a God who does His best work in the mess.

God Moves in the Middle

Perhaps the most important truth of all is this: God isn’t waiting for you to get your life together before He meets you. He is Emmanuel God with us not just in the sanctuary, but in the living room, in the office, in the carpool lane, in the emergency room.

He doesn’t require silence to speak. He doesn’t need calm to act.

Psalm 46:1 says, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” That means He’s here now not just after the chaos, but in the middle of it. And He’s not calling you to wait for some idyllic future. He’s calling you to trust Him with this moment.

So if you’re holding your breath, waiting for life to slow down, let this be your wake-up call: it won’t. And that’s okay. You don’t need a perfect season to live with faith. You just need a willing heart.

Because this isn’t a waiting room. This is your life.

And it’s already happening.
