Forget Your First Name and Live for Legacy
Why living for something greater than yourself matters in God's plan.
In today's world, many focus solely on their individual pursuits, seeking happiness and fulfillment in personal achievements rather than legacy. We often live for our first names, neglecting the larger story of family, history, and future generations. Yet, God calls us to something more: a life that extends beyond personal desires, one rooted in legacy and spiritual inheritance.
The Bible teaches us that our names, when lived for Christ, hold eternal significance. Just as God promised Abraham to make his name great through his descendants (Genesis 12:2), we are called to build a legacy that reflects God's glory, not just our own. This isn't about self-centered ambition but about participating in a greater story God’s story. Our families, our future generations, are part of this enduring legacy that transcends time.
In contrast, living only for personal success and neglecting the responsibility to pass on faith and values leads to a legacy that fades quickly. We see this throughout scripture, where a name could be blessed or blotted out based on one's relationship with God and how they lived for His purposes. Today, society is quick to dismiss family and legacy, but as Christians, we must remember that our identity is not solely about individualism it is found in Christ.
The Bible tells us that those who live faithfully will be honored, with their names written in the Lamb's book of life (Revelation 13:8). We do not labor for recognition in this world but for the glory of Christ, whose name is above all names (Philippians 2:9-11). Our ultimate legacy isn't tied to our achievements but to our faithfulness in Christ, passed down to our children and communities.
In light of this, we are called to live selflessly, leaving a godly heritage that glorifies Christ. Whether we build families, serve in ministry, or cultivate faith in those around us, our focus should be on the eternal significance of what we leave behind. We should strive to leave a name that points to Jesus, for His name is the only one worth remembering.
