Navigating Gospel Disagreements in Friendships
Balancing truth and love when doctrinal differences challenge relationships.

Friendships are vital to our Christian journey, offering support and shared faith. However, when significant doctrinal disagreements arise, especially concerning core gospel truths, it can challenge the foundation of these relationships. How should believers navigate such situations, maintaining both truth and love?
Understanding the Gravity of Doctrinal Differences
The New Testament provides guidance on handling doctrinal deviations. The Apostle Paul, for instance, addressed situations where individuals within the church propagated teachings contrary to the gospel. In Galatians 1:8–9, he emphasizes the seriousness of this issue:
"But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed."
This underscores the importance of preserving the integrity of the gospel message.
Approaching a Friend in Error
When a close friend adopts beliefs that diverge from foundational Christian doctrines, it's essential to address the matter with both conviction and compassion. Engaging in open, honest conversations rooted in Scripture can illuminate the truth. However, if the friend remains unyielding, further steps may be necessary.
Biblical Guidance on Separation
Scripture offers counsel on how to interact with those who, while professing faith, reject essential truths:
2 John 1:10–11: "If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works."
Titus 3:10: "As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him."
These passages suggest that, after earnest attempts to correct and guide, there may come a point where distancing oneself is appropriate to uphold the purity of the faith and avoid endorsing false teachings.
Maintaining Love Amidst Separation
Even when separation becomes necessary, it's crucial to continue loving the individual. This love manifests in praying for their return to sound doctrine and being open to reconciliation should they repent. The goal is always restoration, aiming to guide them back to the truth.
Practical Steps Forward
Engage in Dialogue: Initiate conversations that focus on understanding their perspective and gently present biblical truths.
Seek Counsel: Consult with church leaders or mature believers for guidance and support in addressing the situation.
Set Boundaries: If the friend persists in promoting false teachings, it may be necessary to limit close fellowship to prevent confusion or division.
Pray Earnestly: Commit to praying for your friend, asking God to reveal truth and bring about repentance.
Navigating gospel disagreements in friendships is challenging. Yet, by adhering to biblical principles and acting in love, believers can uphold the truth while seeking the spiritual well-being of their friends.
