Pursuing Holy Desires
Aligning Our Hearts with God's Will.

In the quiet moments of our daily lives, we often find ourselves wrestling with thoughts and desires that lead us away from God's presence. This internal struggle is a common experience for many believers, highlighting the need to realign our hearts with God's will.
The Battle Within
Our hearts are naturally inclined to desire, but sin has distorted these inclinations. We may find ourselves seeking approval from others, fearing failure, or yearning for worldly success. These misaligned desires can distract us from our true purpose and lead us away from God's path.
Understanding Disordered Affections
The late theologian John Webster described the reordering of our affections as a fundamental aspect of the Christian gospel. He emphasized that our loves govern our lives, influencing our actions and decisions. Therefore, it's crucial to examine what captures our hearts and to redirect our desires toward God.
The Process of Reordering Our Desires
To realign our hearts with God's will, we can follow a four-step process:
Test: Reflect on your current desires and pursuits. What occupies your thoughts and drives your actions? Honest self-examination can reveal areas where your affections may be misaligned.
Seek: Actively pursue the things of God. Engage in practices that draw you closer to Him, such as reading Scripture, participating in worship, and serving others. By seeking God, we fill our hearts with His presence, leaving less room for worldly desires.
Pray: Consistently communicate with God, asking Him to transform your heart and align your desires with His. Prayer invites God's power into our lives, enabling us to overcome sinful inclinations.
Fight: Recognize that this is an ongoing battle. Be vigilant and proactive in resisting temptations and redirecting your desires toward God. Surround yourself with a supportive community that encourages you in this journey.
The Role of Community
Engaging with a community of believers provides accountability and encouragement. Sharing your struggles and victories with others can strengthen your resolve and offer new perspectives on aligning your desires with God's will.
Living a Transformed Life
As we diligently test, seek, pray, and fight, our hearts become more attuned to God's desires. This transformation leads to a life marked by peace, purpose, and a deeper relationship with our Creator.
