Quarterback Dreams and Kingdom Calling

God's plans often intertwine our passions with His purpose.

A Field of Dreams, A Heart for God

The roar of the crowd, the precision of the throw, the thrill of victory. For many, the life of a professional athlete represents the pinnacle of success. It's a world of intense competition, unwavering dedication, and the constant pursuit of excellence. Yet, sometimes, amidst the bright lights and the demanding schedule, a deeper calling resonates within the heart. A calling that transcends the game and points to a purpose far greater than earthly achievements.

We often see glimpses of this in athletes who openly share their faith. They remind us that even in the most secular and demanding environments, God's presence can be a guiding force, shaping their decisions and influencing their actions. Their stories offer a powerful testament to the fact that faith and ambition are not mutually exclusive, but rather can coexist and even complement each other. It's a beautiful thing to witness an individual excel in their chosen field while simultaneously using their platform to shine a light on their faith.

The journey of faith is a deeply personal one, unique to each individual. However, the underlying principles remain constant: a belief in something larger than oneself, a commitment to living according to certain values, and a desire to make a positive impact on the world. For some, this journey leads to formal ministry, while for others, it manifests in more subtle yet equally meaningful ways.

The Unexpected Missionary

It’s inspiring to hear stories of individuals, particularly those in high-profile positions, who express a desire to serve God in a more profound way. This desire often stems from a deep-seated conviction that their talents and influence can be used to further God's kingdom. They recognize that their platform provides a unique opportunity to reach a wider audience and share their faith with people who might not otherwise be exposed to it.

We are all called to be missionaries in our own way, wherever God has placed us. This doesn't necessarily mean traveling to foreign lands or preaching from a pulpit. It can simply mean living out our faith in our daily lives, treating others with kindness and compassion, and being a positive influence in our communities. As Matthew 5:16 reminds us, "In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

Consider the Apostle Paul, a man whose life was radically transformed by his encounter with Jesus. Before his conversion, Paul was a persecutor of Christians. But after his encounter with Christ on the road to Damascus, he became a passionate advocate for the Gospel, traveling extensively and enduring hardship to spread the message of salvation. Paul's story illustrates the transformative power of faith and the profound impact that one person can have when they are fully surrendered to God's will.

Faith in Action: Beyond the Game

The intersection of faith and action is a powerful force for good in the world. When we combine our belief in God with a commitment to serving others, we become agents of change, working to alleviate suffering, promote justice, and spread hope. This is the essence of living out our faith in a tangible and meaningful way. It's about more than just words; it's about deeds.

The Bible is filled with examples of individuals who put their faith into action. From Moses leading the Israelites out of slavery to Ruth's unwavering loyalty to Naomi, these stories demonstrate the power of faith to overcome obstacles and transform lives. These individuals didn't just believe in God; they acted on their beliefs, demonstrating their commitment through their words and deeds.

When we see someone using their platform to glorify God, it is a powerful reminder of the impact faith can have. Their willingness to speak openly about their beliefs, even in the face of potential criticism, is a testament to their conviction and a source of inspiration for others. They demonstrate that it is possible to be successful in the world while remaining true to one's faith.

We can draw encouragement from 1 Timothy 4:12: "Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity." This verse reminds us that age is not a barrier to making a difference in the world. Regardless of our age or background, we can all be examples of faith in action.

Embracing God's Calling on Your Life

Discovering and embracing God's calling on your life is a lifelong journey. It requires prayer, reflection, and a willingness to be led by the Holy Spirit. It also requires courage, as following God's path may lead us to unexpected places and challenge us to step outside of our comfort zones.

Perhaps you feel a nudge to volunteer at a local charity, or to start a ministry in your workplace, or to simply be a more intentional witness to your faith in your daily interactions. Whatever the prompting, don't dismiss it. Instead, prayerfully consider how you can use your gifts and talents to serve God and make a difference in the lives of others.

Remember the words of Jeremiah 29:11: "'For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’" God has a purpose for each and every one of us. He has equipped us with unique gifts and talents, and He desires to use us to accomplish His will in the world. Our role is to be open to His guidance, to trust in His plan, and to step out in faith, knowing that He will be with us every step of the way.

Even when we face setbacks and challenges, we can find comfort in the knowledge that God is in control. As Romans 8:28 assures us, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." This verse doesn't promise that life will be easy, but it does promise that God will use every situation, even the difficult ones, to bring about good in our lives.

The Power of Influence: A Ripple Effect

When someone uses their platform to glorify God, it creates a ripple effect, inspiring others to do the same. Their actions become a beacon of light, drawing others closer to God and encouraging them to live out their faith more boldly. This is the power of influence, and it is a responsibility that should be taken seriously.

We all have influence, whether we realize it or not. Our words, our actions, and our attitudes all have an impact on the people around us. Therefore, it is important to be mindful of the message we are sending and to strive to be a positive influence in the lives of others. As Ephesians 4:29 reminds us, "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."

Consider the story of Esther, a young Jewish woman who became queen of Persia. When her people were threatened with annihilation, Esther risked her own life to plead with the king on their behalf. Her courage and faith saved her people from destruction, demonstrating the power of one person to make a difference in the world. Esther's story reminds us that God can use us, even in the most unlikely circumstances, to accomplish His purposes.

Living a life of faith is not always easy. It requires courage, humility, and a willingness to surrender our own desires to God's will. But the rewards are immeasurable. When we live according to God's plan, we experience a sense of purpose and fulfillment that cannot be found anywhere else. We also become a source of inspiration and encouragement to others, helping them to discover the joy of living a life of faith.

"Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing." 1 Thessalonians 5:11

Ultimately, the story serves as a powerful reminder that faith is not meant to be compartmentalized. It is not something we practice only on Sundays or in private moments. It is meant to permeate every aspect of our lives, influencing our decisions, shaping our actions, and guiding us toward a life of purpose and meaning. When we embrace this truth, we discover the transformative power of faith and its ability to impact not only our own lives but also the lives of those around us.
