Raising Children with a Heart for the Nations

Nurturing a Heart for God’s Global Mission in Your Children.

As parents, one of the greatest desires we have for our children is to see them grow up with a heart that reflects the love of Christ. But how do we go beyond the everyday lessons of kindness and obedience to cultivate a deep love for the nations in their hearts? How can we, as Christian parents, raise our kids to understand and embrace God’s global mission?

Raising children to love the nations is not simply about teaching them to be globally minded or culturally aware. It's about instilling in them a passion for God’s heart for all people. Throughout Scripture, we see a recurring theme: God’s desire for His name to be known and worshiped among every tribe, tongue, and nation. From Genesis to Revelation, God’s mission is global, and as His followers, we are called to participate in that mission—including our children.

The Bible’s Call to the Nations

God’s love for the nations is woven into the fabric of the Bible. From the moment He called Abraham, God made it clear that His plan was not just for one people group but for the whole world. In Genesis 12:3, God promises Abraham, “In you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” This promise finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ, through whom salvation is offered to every nation.

Psalm 67:2-3 echoes this global mission: “May your ways be known throughout the earth, your saving power among people everywhere. May the nations praise you, O God.” God’s heart is for His name to be worshiped in every corner of the earth, and as parents, we have the privilege of helping our children catch this vision.

By teaching our children about God’s love for the nations, we help them see the bigger picture of His redemptive plan. They come to understand that the gospel is not just for us it’s for everyone. And as part of God’s family, we are called to be part of His mission to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19).

Modeling a Heart for the Nations

One of the most powerful ways to instill a love for the nations in our children is by modeling it in our own lives. Kids learn by watching what we value, where we invest our time, and how we engage with the world around us. If we want our children to care about God’s global mission, we need to demonstrate that we care about it too.

This doesn’t mean we all have to move to a foreign country to be missionaries (although God may call some of us to that!). It means cultivating a heart for the nations right where we are. One way to do this is by making global missions part of your family’s daily life. Here are a few practical ways to get started:

  • Pray for the Nations: Make praying for different countries and people groups a regular part of your family’s prayer time. You can use resources like "Operation World" or mission organization websites to learn about specific nations and how to pray for them. This helps your children develop a heart for those who have not yet heard the gospel.

  • Learn About Other Cultures: Introduce your kids to the beauty and diversity of other cultures. This could involve learning about different customs, foods, and languages. Help them see that every culture reflects God’s creativity and that people from all nations are precious in His sight.

  • Support Missionaries: Get your children involved in supporting missionaries through prayer, financial support, or encouraging letters. Many missionaries send newsletters or updates that families can read together. Knowing real people who are sharing the gospel in other parts of the world helps children see the personal side of missions.

  • Participate in Local Outreach: Engage in opportunities to serve immigrants, refugees, or international students in your community. This can help your children see that loving the nations starts at home by loving and welcoming those from other cultures.

  • Expose Them to God’s Word: Regularly read Scripture that highlights God’s heart for the nations. Books like Psalms, Isaiah, and the Gospels offer numerous passages that show God’s global mission. Make it a point to discuss these themes and how they connect to the Great Commission.

Teaching Your Children to Live Missionally

Beyond modeling a love for the nations, it’s important to teach your children what it means to live missionally. This involves helping them understand that the Great Commission is not just for adults or for people in full-time ministry—it’s for every believer, including them.

Start by explaining the Great Commission in simple terms. Teach them that Jesus commanded His followers to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). You can explain that while not everyone will physically go to another country, every Christian is called to be part of God’s mission.

Encourage your children to think about how they can be missionaries in their own lives. Whether at school, in their neighborhood, or on a sports team, they can share the love of Jesus with others. Teach them that being a missionary isn’t about wearing a title—it’s about living with a purpose that glorifies God and points others to Christ.

Raising Kids with a Global Perspective

Another key to raising kids who love the nations is helping them develop a global perspective. In a world that often encourages self-centeredness and comfort, we can help our children see beyond their immediate surroundings and think about the broader world. This is not just about making them more culturally aware; it’s about helping them see that the gospel is for all people and that God’s kingdom is much bigger than their own personal experience.

One way to do this is by sharing stories of believers from different parts of the world. Biographies of missionaries or testimonies of Christians in other countries can inspire your children and help them see how God is working globally. You can also share current events related to global missions, explaining how the gospel is spreading even in difficult circumstances.

Additionally, consider involving your family in a short-term mission trip, either locally or abroad. These experiences can open your children’s eyes to the needs of the world and give them a firsthand glimpse of God’s work in other cultures.

Empowering Kids to Be World-Changers

Ultimately, raising kids to love the nations is about empowering them to see themselves as part of God’s global mission. It’s about helping them realize that they don’t have to wait until they’re adults to make an impact for the kingdom of God—they can start now.

Encourage your children to ask God how He wants to use them to spread His love and truth to the nations. Whether through prayer, giving, serving, or sharing the gospel, they can make a difference. Remind them that God has a plan and purpose for their lives that is connected to His larger mission in the world.

As parents, we have the privilege of shaping our children’s hearts and helping them understand their role in God’s redemptive story. By teaching them to love the nations, we are equipping them to live lives that reflect God’s heart for the world and to be part of His mission to make disciples of all nations.
