Calculating the Amount You Need for Retirement

Trusting God's Provision as You Plan for the Future.

When thinking about retirement, many wrestle with the balance between saving responsibly and maintaining a generous heart for missions and the church. Retirement planning often feels overwhelming, especially when media outlets suggest lofty goals like $1.5 million in savings. For Christians, the real question is not just how much to save, but how to honor God throughout the process.

Scripture provides guidance on financial stewardship, urging believers to work diligently and provide for their families (1 Thessalonians 4:11-12). Yet, the Bible also emphasizes that retirement is not a time to pursue endless leisure, but an opportunity to continue serving in God’s mission. Giving to the church and ministries, even in later years, should remain a priority, reflecting a heart for advancing God's kingdom.

Though health and financial independence are key, it’s vital to remember that God has designed families, churches, and communities to care for each other. As 1 Timothy 5:8 teaches, providing for relatives in need is a godly duty. For those without family support, the church and broader social safety nets can step in. Planning for retirement means being wise, but also recognizing that true security comes from God, not wealth.

Moreover, it’s important to reject the typical American dream of a “golden” retirement filled with leisure. Instead, view the latter part of life as an extension of ministry. Whether through volunteering, giving, or serving, Christians should remain focused on God’s call to relieve suffering and share the gospel.

By applying these biblical principles, we can approach retirement with faith, trusting that God will provide for our needs while allowing us to continue serving His kingdom.
