Angels are fascinating beings mentioned throughout the Bible, serving as God’s messengers and performing various critical roles. Understanding the roles of angels helps us appreciate the divine order and God's ongoing work in the world. Here are four important roles that angels play according to Scripture.
1. Messengers of God
One of the primary roles of angels in the Bible is to serve as messengers of God. They deliver important messages to individuals, often providing guidance, instruction, or prophecy. The Greek word for angel, "angelos," literally means "messenger."
A notable example is the angel Gabriel, who appears multiple times in Scripture. In Luke 1:26-28, Gabriel announces to Mary that she will conceive and bear a son, Jesus: "In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, 'Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.'"
Gabriel’s message to Mary highlights the critical role angels play in communicating God’s plans and purposes to His people.
2. Protectors of God’s People
Angels are often depicted as protectors who watch over and defend God’s people. Psalm 91:11-12 reassures us of this protective role: "For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone."
In the Old Testament, angels frequently intervene to protect and deliver individuals from danger. For instance, in Daniel 6:22, Daniel testifies that God sent an angel to shut the mouths of the lions, protecting him from harm in the lions' den: "My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight."
These accounts remind us of God's provision and the unseen protection He provides through His angels.
3. Worshipers of God
Angels are also depicted as worshipers who continually praise and glorify God. The book of Revelation provides vivid imagery of angels worshiping around God’s throne. Revelation 5:11-12 describes a scene of angelic worship: "Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. In a loud voice they were saying: 'Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!'"
The constant worship of angels highlights their role in glorifying God and serves as an example for us to follow in our own lives.
4. Executors of God’s Judgments
Angels also play a significant role as executors of God’s judgments, carrying out His justice on earth. In the book of Genesis, angels are sent to Sodom and Gomorrah to execute God's judgment on these cities for their wickedness. Genesis 19:13 states, "Because we are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the Lord against its people is so great that he has sent us to destroy it."
In the New Testament, the book of Revelation describes various instances where angels are involved in executing God’s final judgments on the earth. Revelation 8:6-7 depicts the sounding of the first trumpet by an angel, resulting in devastating consequences: "Then the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to sound them. The first angel sounded his trumpet, and there came hail and fire mixed with blood, and it was hurled down on the earth."
These examples illustrate the role of angels in enforcing divine justice and carrying out God’s will.
Conclusion
Angels play diverse and significant roles in the Bible, from delivering God’s messages and providing protection to worshiping God and executing His judgments. Understanding these roles helps us appreciate the divine order and the ways in which God interacts with His creation through these heavenly beings.
