Spiritual Growth Comes Through Routine, Not Just Emotion

Embracing Daily Habits Can Awaken Our Faith Beyond Feelings.

In our faith journeys, many of us encounter seasons where we simply don’t “feel” the closeness to God we desire. These moments can lead us to question our spiritual health or delay time in God’s presence. However, there is tremendous power in maintaining steady routines, even when emotions waver. The Bible itself, especially in Psalm 119, speaks to the benefits of structured prayer, Scripture reading, and intentional moments with God.

Though some might feel routine inhibits the Spirit, consistency can actually deepen spiritual life. Like a farmer reaping harvest only through consistent effort, so do we gather strength and joy by prioritizing devotion regularly, regardless of feelings. We must remember that the Christian walk often involves intentional discipline that opens the door for spontaneous, Spirit-led moments of joy and revelation.

The Power of Routine in Spiritual Life

Daily devotion has profound impact on our relationship with God. We see this in figures like Daniel, who prayed three times a day despite persecution, and even in Jesus, who practiced regular prayer early in the morning (Mark 1:35). These examples remind us that routines like morning devotions and midday retreats help keep our hearts set on God.

  • Morning Devotions: Starting each day in God’s presence sets a trajectory. Psalm 5:3 speaks of offering our morning prayers to God, letting Him shape our day’s priorities.

  • Midday Retreats: Routines that bring us back to God throughout the day renew our focus and revive our spirits. Setting reminders or posting Scripture around our homes can keep us mindful of His presence.

Renewed and Rejoicing in God’s Word

When spiritual routines feel tedious, we should remember Psalm 19:7-8, which tells us that God’s law revives and rejoices the heart. Despite our “not feeling it” moments, staying faithful to routine allows God’s word to awaken joy and resilience in our hearts.
