Discussing Jesus in a Thoughtful and Relatable Way
Sharing Your Faith with Humility, Generosity, and Authenticity.

We’ve all encountered those individuals on college campuses who make us cringe at the thought of being associated with them—the ones wearing outdated clothing, shouting “turn or burn” through a megaphone. It's hard to see how such tactics could ever lead someone to Christ. In fact, this approach can do more harm than good, pushing people away rather than drawing them near. So, how do we strike a balance between being too aggressive and too silent in sharing our faith?
Here are a few practical ideas to help you share your faith in a way that is authentic, loving, and, most importantly, effective.
1. Invite People In
Paul’s words, “Follow me as I follow Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1), provide a powerful example of how we can share our faith. Paul didn’t just tell people what to do; he invited them to observe his life up close. He wasn’t trying to appear perfect from a distance; instead, he welcomed others into the reality of his daily walk with Christ, flaws and all.
We can do the same by inviting others into our lives, allowing them to see how we navigate our relationships, our challenges, and our faith. This means being honest about our struggles and showing how we rely on God’s grace in the midst of them. It’s not about having it all together, but about living out our faith authentically and letting others see the real, unpolished version of what it means to follow Jesus.
In biblical times, life was lived in close-knit communities where people shared meals, work, and their daily lives. This kind of deep influence took time and proximity—something that’s still true today. Building relationships over time and sharing your life with others can have a much greater impact than shouting Bible verses from a street corner.
2. Start Small, Right Where You Are
The thought of sharing your faith with the entire world can be overwhelming and paralyzing. Instead, start small. Focus on the people right around you—your roommates, classmates, or coworkers. Showcase the good in the world rather than ranting about what’s wrong with it.
Simple acts of kindness can be powerful. Bring a meal to someone who’s going through a tough time, volunteer at a local shelter, or just listen to a friend who needs to talk. These actions show your faith without you having to say a word. They create opportunities for genuine connections and open doors for deeper conversations about faith.
As Maya Angelou wisely said, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” By serving others with humility and love, you embody the message of Christ in a way that is hard to argue with.
3. Be Generous
Christians are often stereotyped as stingy or hypocritical, but what if we used this as motivation to do better? What if we were known for our generosity, for living out the values we claim to hold dear?
Generosity goes beyond just giving money—it includes offering your time, talents, and even your presence. But financial generosity is also a powerful testimony. Imagine giving in a way that requires you to rearrange your life, to sacrifice some of your own comforts so that others might thrive. This kind of generosity doesn’t just benefit those on the receiving end—it transforms the giver as well.
When we choose to live generously, our hearts become more aligned with God’s heart. Our lives begin to reflect the mission of the Gospel, prioritizing eternal investments over temporary gains. As Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). By being generous, we demonstrate a faith that is lived out in tangible, impactful ways.
The most effective way to talk about Jesus is through the relationships you build. When people know you genuinely care about them, they are more open to hearing about your faith. Don’t feel pressured to “convert” someone in a single conversation. Instead, focus on building trust and understanding over time.
In your conversations, be a good listener. Ask questions and show interest in their lives. When you speak about your faith, do so with humility and respect. Share how Jesus has impacted your life, but avoid coming across as if you have all the answers. People are more receptive to a faith that is shared with love and grace rather than one that is imposed on them.
5. Live Out Your Faith Daily
Ultimately, the most compelling way to talk about Jesus is to live out your faith every day. Your actions, attitudes, and how you treat others will speak volumes. When people see the peace, joy, and love that come from a life rooted in Christ, they will be curious. They’ll want to know what’s different about you, and that curiosity opens the door for you to share the hope you have in Jesus.
Being a follower of Christ isn’t about perfection—it’s about living a life that points others to Him. By inviting others into your life, serving with humility, being generous, and building relationships, you can share your faith in a way that is both authentic and effective. Remember, it’s not about having all the right answers; it’s about being a reflection of God’s love in the world.
As you go about your day, look for opportunities to love and serve those around you. And when the time comes to talk about your faith, do so with gentleness and respect. The impact of a life lived for Christ will always speak louder than words.
