Embracing True Service to God
Discovering the Joyful Purpose of Serving with God’s Strength.

When we talk about serving God, it’s crucial to understand what true service means. Pastor John Piper emphasizes that serving God isn’t about fulfilling a need of His, but rather about allowing His power to work through us. Here are key points to inspire a deeper, grace-filled service:
Serve by Receiving God’s Strength
True service means relying on the strength God provides rather than striving to meet any need He may have. Acts 17:25 tells us, "God is not served by human hands, as though he needed anything," reminding us that our efforts are only possible because of His enabling grace.
Embrace the Gift of Every Effort
Each act of service no matter how small is itself a gift of grace. Piper encourages us to see every step in obedience as an opportunity to go “deeper into debt to grace,” meaning we are continually receiving, not repaying, His goodness. This approach transforms service from obligation into joy-filled worship.
Position Yourself for Blessing
To “serve” God in the truest sense is to align our lives with the outpouring of His blessing. Just as we pursue security in worldly resources, Piper challenges us to position ourselves under God’s “waterfall of blessing” living so that we benefit from all He promises and is.
Glorify the Giver, Embrace the Joy
The ultimate purpose of serving God is His glory and our joy. When we serve by His power, He receives the glory, and we find joy in Him, not in our efforts. Romans 12:11 reminds us to “serve the Lord” with zeal, not to gain His favor, but to delight in His purpose and His presence.
Every effort we make in serving God should come from a posture of receiving His grace, reflecting His strength, and seeking His glory. Let this understanding of service guide you in deepening your walk with Him and experiencing the joy He offers.
