The Dangers of Squandering Your Spiritual Gifts
Recognizing the Subtle Dangers That Keep Us from Using God’s Gifts.

Each of us has received unique gifts from God, abilities meant to serve others and glorify Him. Yet, many squander these spiritual gifts without even realizing it. The apostle Paul urges us to use the abilities we’ve been given: "Having gifts that differ...let us use them" (Romans 12:6). But why do some let their God-given potential fade?
One of the most common reasons is distraction. Many spiritual gifts don’t wither due to outright rejection but die in the fog of everyday distractions. Our world is filled with things that subtly pull us away from using our gifts endless entertainment, work, and pursuits of personal fulfillment can keep us from investing in God’s purposes. Paul warns in Romans 12:2, "Do not be conformed to this world," a reminder that chasing worldly desires can choke the life out of our spiritual potential.
Another way we squander gifts is through selfishness. Often, we mistakenly think that these abilities are for our own advancement or personal satisfaction. However, Scripture reminds us that we are "members one of another" (Romans 12:5), meaning our gifts are given for the benefit of others, especially within the body of Christ. When we prioritize ourselves over others, we prevent these abilities from fulfilling their intended purpose.
Pride also prevents many from using their spiritual gifts. When we think too highly of ourselves, we may overlook small, humble acts of service that God calls us to perform. Paul advises us to "think with sober judgment" (Romans 12:3), understanding that even the faith and abilities we have are gracious gifts from God.
Lastly, passivity is a significant reason why many gifts remain dormant. It’s easy to delay or make excuses, thinking someone else will step up to serve. But Paul commands us to actively seek ways to use our abilities, no matter how insignificant they might seem. As 1 Peter 4:10 says, "As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace."
If you’ve noticed your gifts withering, take heart. It's never too late to refocus and use them to serve others and glorify God. Ask Him for guidance and strength to step out in faith and watch as He brings your gifts to life.
