Five Common Mistakes in Judging Others

Overcoming Biases Through Biblical Wisdom

We often misjudge others due to various biases, but the Bible provides guidance to overcome these misjudgments. Here are five common ways we misjudge people and how Scripture helps us see more clearly.

1. By Sight

When Samuel sought the next king of Israel, he initially judged by appearance, but God reminded him, “The Lord looks on the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). God chose David, the least likely by human standards, showing that true worth lies within.

2. By Word

People grow at different rates. Sanctification is a process, and we must respect others’ growth in holiness. Avoid judging by words alone; instead, understand their journey and the work God is doing in their lives.

3. By Experience

Our experiences shape our views, but they don’t always match others’. Judging those with troubled pasts harshly is un-Christlike. Each person’s life is unique, and only God fully understands their journey.

4. By Others

Paul warned against comparing ourselves to others, as it lacks understanding (2 Corinthians 10:12). Jesus, not others, is our standard. Avoid measuring people by our standards or by comparison to others.

5. By Assuming

Assumptions often lead to misunderstandings. Paul teaches that love believes and hopes the best (1 Corinthians 13:7). Give others the benefit of the doubt and avoid assuming the worst without knowing the facts.

Conclusion

We are all guilty of misjudgment, but through repentance and commitment, we can see others as God sees them. The ground is level at the foot of the cross; we are all equally in need of God’s grace. Accept others as they are, just as God accepted us (Romans 5:10).
