Exploring What Astonishes Jesus

Exploring the Astonishment of Christ at Faith and Unbelief.

What captures Jesus' attention? Throughout the Gospels, we find two remarkable instances where Jesus marveled at the centurion's great faith and the profound unbelief in his hometown. These moments reveal the deep impact of faith, or the lack thereof, on the heart of Christ.

In Mark 6:6, Jesus marvels at the unbelief of his own people, despite witnessing his teachings and miracles. This shows how deeply human rejection of divine truth can astonish even the Son of God. Conversely, in Matthew 8:10, Jesus marvels at the centurion's faith a non-Israelite soldier recognizing Jesus' authority without needing his physical presence to heal.

Faith is the essential ingredient that moves the heart of Jesus. It is not our achievements, wealth, or status but our trust in his power and love. This truth invites us to examine our own hearts. Are we like the centurion, quick to trust, or do we fall into disbelief despite clear evidence of God’s goodness?

Interestingly, faith, or the lack thereof, not only affects our relationship with Jesus but also his actions. In Mark 6:5, Jesus could not perform many miracles in his hometown due to their lack of faith. This limitation wasn’t due to a loss of divine power but rather the people's refusal to believe and receive.

This passage encourages us to foster a living, active faith. Faith that trusts in Jesus' authority can unlock divine blessings and miracles, even today. The challenge remains: Will our faith make Jesus marvel? And if so, will it be because of its strength or its absence?

Let this inspire us to cultivate a deeper, more trusting relationship with Christ, knowing that our faith matters to Him profoundly.
