Living the Great Commission as a Young Mom

What if your stroller, snacks, and sleepless nights are part of God’s global plan?

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.” These words from Jesus in Matthew 28:19 were not just meant for apostles, pastors, or missionaries deep in the jungle. They echo across time and culture straight into the noise of a toddler’s tantrum, the quiet fatigue of a nursing mother, and the humble halls of a Midwestern home. Yes, these words are for moms, too.

Jesus Sees the Mothers

If you’re a mom clutching a baby carrier, your purse weighed down with wipes and crushed crackers, Jesus sees you. He hasn’t overlooked your life simply because it feels consumed by diapers, dishes, or daycare pickups. He doesn’t consider your role as secondary or less spiritual. The same God who empowered Peter to preach at Pentecost empowers you to disciple your children and neighbors.

The Great Commission is not reserved for those who traverse borders or scale mountains. It is as much for the mom whose mission field is the local playground as it is for the evangelist in the city square. What looks mundane in the world’s eyes is often miraculous in God's. When you speak life into your child or share truth with another weary mother, you are planting eternal seeds.

A Legacy Rooted in Promise

Jesus referenced the Abrahamic covenant because His redemptive plan was always global. Abraham was to be a blessing to all nations (Genesis 12:1–3), and that mission is fulfilled through Jesus. Now, mothers everywhere carry forward this global mission not merely by traveling abroad, but by making disciples wherever they are.

Consider this: there are approximately 2 billion mothers worldwide, and an estimated 385,000 babies are born each day. This daily miracle presents an enormous mission field teeming with potential. Every one of these children and their mothers are souls loved by God. And who better to reach these women than other mothers those who understand sleepless nights, selfless love, and the deep, aching hope for their child’s future?

Mission Is Not a Stage Role

Being a mom and a missionary might feel like playing the tree in a school play supporting cast, never center stage. But in God’s kingdom, there are no minor roles. The woman who disciples her neighbor, loves her children fiercely, and lives out the gospel in her community is just as vital as the one who translates Scripture in an unreached language.

When moms go to the hard places be it remote villages or emotionally distant neighborhoods they reflect the light of Christ. Their families become cities on a hill (Matthew 5:14), and their everyday acts of faith draw others to Jesus. As Romans 10:14 reminds us, people cannot believe if they have never heard. And many women in this world have yet to hear the name of Jesus spoken by someone who knows their joys and sorrows.

The Gospel in Motherhood

The most powerful gospel witness often comes through the ordinary, the overlooked, and the painful. For many moms on the mission field, the door to share Jesus swings open because of how they parent. It’s not about polished moments or perfect routines it’s about laying down your life, again and again, just like Christ did for us.

When you patiently shepherd a tantruming child, you reflect the God who gathers His flock (Isaiah 40:11). When you rejoice over your child’s scribbles and celebrate their small wins, you echo the God who delights in His people (Zephaniah 3:17). The trials of motherhood whether it's postpartum blues or sleepless nights become a gospel bridge when shared with another hurting heart.

Strategic Motherhood

Jesus once praised the shrewd manager in Luke 16 for using worldly wealth to secure future gain. In the same way, moms can strategically use their unique experiences to connect with other women. A child’s tantrum might spark a conversation at the park. Sharing your struggles with another mom might lead to a heart open to Christ.

Instead of viewing motherhood as a detour from spiritual impact, what if it’s your path to it? Your children and others’ are hungry for meaning that Disney movies and extracurriculars can’t satisfy. They need to see that they were made for more made for glory, for mission, and for God.

Disciples at Home and Among the Nations

Making disciples doesn’t just bless the nations it blesses your children, too. Kids thrive when they see their parents living with purpose. When a child watches their mother trust God in the chaos of daily life, when they hear prayers whispered in the night or see hospitality offered to strangers, they are being discipled.

This generation of children will not be strengthened by our attempts to shield them from every hardship but by our example of faith in the storm. If moms move with courage praying with their kids, inviting others into their homes, and speaking the truth in love their children will witness a gospel alive and active. They’ll grow up knowing that faith isn’t just something you hear on Sundays it’s something you live.

You Are Commissioned

So to the mother reading this don’t wait until your house is quieter, your schedule lighter, or your energy higher. The Great Commission is not postponed until preschool ends or the teenage years pass. It is for now.

Disciple your own. Disciple your neighbors. Share Jesus with the mom at the grocery store, the woman at your Bible study, and the child at your kitchen table. The world is watching. Your children are watching. And heaven is waiting for the harvest of your faithfulness.

One day, you may stand before the throne surrounded by people you influenced children of your body and spirit alike each one a testament to your obedience. You will see the ordinary moments woven into God’s extraordinary story.
